I have been a Chief Engineer for the Washington State Ferries for over 20 years and like everyone here a huge Repairman Jack fan. On the front cover of "By the Sword" is a picture taken from the car deck of one of our ferries with the Seattle skyline in the back ground. Naturally I became excited with the possiblity that Jack would be visiting Seattle in this novel. I just finished reading it and this ended up not being the case. Does anyone know why this picture may have been chosen to be placed on the front cover of "By the Sword"?

Spoilers about The Select below

Mr Wilson, I had a question for you , if you don't mind my asking.

So I was just reading Brave New World Revisited and got to the section on sleep learning. Now I realize that there are other works including Clockwork Orange and Fahrenheit 451 that use the idea as well, so I get that it isn't unique, but I wondered how much if any, influence Brave New World had on the formation of The Select? Huxley mentions at one point speakers in the pillow and that conjured the image of the headboards in The Select. Anyway, I was just curious and thought I'd ask.

Im a FPW newbie, and am a die hard Laymon Fan. After reading all Laymon's multiple times, I decided it was time to 'move on'.

Went to local charity shop and picked up 'The Tomb' (pre 1998 1st edition) - man am I glad I got this book, seeing as it turned out to be one of the best books I've ever read (took about 3 days). Abruptly went back to said charity shop and got the only other FPW they had; Sister Night, which so far is also excellent.

Now my question is ; I just brought 'The Last Rakosh' (1st edition signed) but can't see it mentioed in 'list in order to read'. I saw somewhere that it is extension of a short story included in 'All The Rage'?

I want to read all of Repairman Jack Novels, and in correct order, so should I read 'Last Rakosh' before or after 'All The Rage'? I realise that 'Legacies' is 2nd to read, then 'Conspiracies'.

Also, is the 1998 Tomb much different to the pre-1998?

I literally can't wait to read more about the Repairman - you must of all Read 'The Tomb' and I was really really hoping Jack would be back for more Repairman action after the cliffhanger ending :-)

Thanks for your time guys, and THANK YOU FPW - one of the greatest authors I've ever had the pleasure to read.

Been too long since I've done anything but luuuurrrkk here so I *think* I have something of value to add...

I was walking around the San Diego Comic Con a few weeks ago feeling kinda blue 'cause my favorite author didn't want to play with the capes this year. I finally got over it and decided to spend all day checking out the small press booths and maybe purchase a few TPBs to read.

Every year I stop by author Batton Lash's booth to say hi and pick up a book or two. Lash writes a creative & humorous B & W comic entitled "Tales Of Supernatural Law" that features 2 lawyers who represent various supernatural clients in court. Lash visits our local comic book store in Santa Barbara here about once a year for signings and aside from being a witty wordsmith he's also a very cool guy.

I've pretty much trashed my individual issues so I wanted to start picking up some of his collected TPBs. Imagine my surprise when I find that FPW has written the intro to Vol II! Smile I had planned to pick it up anyway but getting a FPW rant on Lawyers to start off the collection was a nice added bonus. Sure, it may have only been a page or so but Paul never fails to entertain!

If you haven't given it a look "Tales Of Supernatural Law" is quite the entertaining book. The collected paperback versions can be had for pretty cheap and Lash is a joy to read. Oh yeah, and FPW endorses him!

Just thought I would share. Looking forward to Dark Delicasies in September!

I was just curious (and perhaps other forum members are, also) as to which F. Paul Wilson book was your first?
How old were you when you read it?
Why did you read it?
Inquiring minds want to know how you got hooked...

Sincerely,
Srem

Here's my story on how it all started:
In 1985 (I was 13 and on summer break from school) my father brought me along on one of his "construction excursions." It was a cold, rainy day and due to the fact that I was too young to operate the heavy machinery needed to build the new indoor tennis court he was working on, I got stuck sitting in his cramped Toyota truck all day.
Sensing my boredom, he gave me some money and said I could go get whatever I wanted from the brand new mini-mart that had popped up next to the tennis court's construction site. After walking around the mini-mart for awhile, and armed with the usual kid-fare of soda pop and candy, I drifted over to the bookstand. Deciding that there was nothing of interest for a 13 year-old kid in the stand, I almost walked away, then my eyes suddenly fell on a creepy-looking greenish-yellow novel with the words THE TOMB emblazoned on the front cover. This was the first soft-back printing of the book, and it was larger than anything I had ever read, but I decided after studying the teaser on the back I was ready for the challenge.
I read and re-read the book several times over the course of 8 years, not realizing that after I had already bought and read another novel titled Nightworld, that this was part of a six-book collection called "The Adversary Cycle." From there I proceeded to painstakingly hunt down and collect the rest of the out-of-print series, which is still one of my favorites to this day.

The end of my story is a tragic one, however, as the worn but still intact remains of my first sentimental copy of The Tomb was torn to shreds by my ex-roommate's pet Beagle. No other book was touched. How could this be, I wondered in anguish?
My only thought was to conclude to the possibility that this vicious excuse for a dog had been touched by the Otherness...

Some oldies up for auction here. I know the seller - a rigorously honest book dealer.

I just got back from a theatre. I saw "G.I. Joe:The Rise of Cobra". It was one entertainment summer movie.

Well, actually I didn't have high expectations. I was NOT G.I.Joe fan when I was a kid. I didn't know much about G.I. Joe. But the movie was okay and I enjoyed it. Action and SFX were magnificent. Some scenes reminded me of TEAM AMERICA. Big Grin

Star Wars(I,II,III) + Team America + The Mummy Returns + Transformers + Black Hawk Down + OO7 series = G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Need I say more? :p

Question for The Man:

Just finished Hosts, again, and I had a question regarding the number of Unity members necessary to guarantee the virus would mutate into an airborne strain.

The Unity seemed to be uncertain that it could occur with only 7 and were overjoyed to get Kate in as the 8th member.

As the series progresses the number 7 (Infernals, Septimus Order, Weezy refers to it being mentioned often in the Compendium, etc.) seems to be increasingly involved; a "rule of 7", if you will.

Was it intentional or simply coincidence that the Unity Virus' airborne mutation was certain with 8, not 7, members?
