I watched Bad Santa last night (starring Billy Bob Thornton) and thought it was awful. It wasn't funny at all, had much more vulgarity than necessary, and really had no point. The previews made it look mildly amusing, but the movies itself was so bad I found myself wishing I had the time back so I could have cleaned my bathroom.

I just thought of something; or rather, a few things.
  • In Conspiracies, an entire house disappeared one night (albeit in the already-strange town of Monroe).
  • In All the Rage, if there never was a real Jersey Devil, well...now there is.
  • In Crisscross, Brady's deep-in-the-woods cabin (*shudders at the memory of what happened in there*), there is still that trapdoor to a secret room where a certain book is being held...

I know, these and other issues may be resolved, and then again they may not, but...hoo, it'd be nice to know more about what happened later on in relation to them.

***SPOILER ALERT***

I just watched Mystic River. I thought it was great but I am confused by a couple of things.

1) At the end Jimmy and his wife (Sean Penn and Laura Linney)are talking, and she tells him how she told their daughters that their father was a good man and would do anything to keep them safe and "that could never be wrong no matter what their daddy had to do." And she refers to him as the King and he could rule the neighborhood. She was REALLY freakin' me out. What the hell was that all about? Did I miss something? She seemed reasonably normal up until that point.

2)What was the point of Sean's (Kevin Bacon) wife being gone and calling on the phone occasionally without speaking? And when she finally spoke at the end was that significant to the story in anyway or was it just a symbol of transition for Dave?

***MAJOR SPOILER***
3) The mute and his friend killed the girl. When her boyfriend figured it out, he stated that the mute had killed her so that she wouldn't leave with him (the boyfriend), thus leaving the mute alone. Then when Sean is telling Jimmy that he caught the killers, he makes up a story about them randomly stopping her on the street and things getting out of hand. Why? Was he trying to minimize the pain for Jimmy in some way. It didn't seem to fit the style of the Sean character.

And now for some random RJ library anecdotes.

Well, I have to wait for my library to come out with Crisscross now. They have all the Repairman Jack books except The Tomb. They also have maybe three of the Nightworld series. Talk about inconsistency... I'm thinking of leaving little notes in all the FPW books because someone keeps taking them out before I do; I suppose it was too much to hope that I would be the only FPW fan in the entire city...

Another point of irritation. My library doesn't keep track of their paperbacks. That means you can't look them up on the computer, they are often not in alphabetical order, and people can take them and nobody will notice. I have a personal vendetta against this system, for my first FPW book happened to be Masque, which I had been glancing at for quite a while before actually taking it out. Instantly I was hooked. Everytime I went to the library, I would check it out again.

And now someone has stolen it, probably forever. Its presence has not been sensed on the Sci-Fi Paperback Rotating Thing for over a year now. It angers me greatly.

This is also the reason Legacies was the last RJ book I'd read, because it was the only one in paperback and I couldn't find it (it was probably stuck between the Romance Novels or something).

One more tragedy: While all the FPW books had a shelf of their own, except for Masque and Legacies which were in paperback, they put Conspiracies ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ADULT FICTION AREA, UNDER MYSTERY.

*deep sigh*

Well, Crisscross will console my pain. *grimaces*

Hi all - I thought the collectors out there might like to know there's a Dark Harvest ARC of Nightworld on ebay at the moment. Recently, FP himself said he didn't have a copy so I guess it's pretty rare. It took me a while to get a hold of one for myself so I wanted to let y'all know

Re-reading The Tomb and I'm noticing a couple things. First off, this is the edition with the "Jack silhouette" on the cover, "The Tomb" in letters with a chain making the "O" in "Tomb". Not sure if that's the updated edition.

Anyhow.

As I mentioned in another thread: Vicky and chocolate. Specifically, her strong allergic reaction to chocolate being a plot point of this book. Yet a year (and a bit) later in Crisscross, she's crazy about chocolate candies on Halloween. Maybe I'm wrong somewhere here (probably; FPW is usually very tight on details).

Second: Abe says, in one of his first conversations with Jack, that he doesn't have a "fallout shelter" type deal. They're going on about Abe's prediction of an economic Holocaust. He could be lying, sure. I mean, who wants to tell someone, even someone they trust implicitly, about their ace in the hole. But in Nightworld, doesn't Abe take Gia and Vicky to a shelter somewhere in the woods to ride out the worst bits of that book?

Last (I think; not done yet): I thought Abe was shorter than 5'9". That's the height in the book, but I swear he's shorter in the later novels. Again, this is from memory (and mine is . . . what was I saying?), so . . .

Anyhow, just pointing these out; I've noticed some people spot editorial errors so FPW can repair them in later editions. Don't know if Rakoshi has wrapped editing so it can be printed, and if so--maybe the movie tie-in paperback could benefit.

WARNING: Here there be spoilers! Arrrrr, matey!

I'm a little over halfway through BLACK WIND (the Japanese fleet is about to hit Pearl Harbor), and I am really enjoying it so far. It took me a few pages to catch the rhythm on the narrator changes (going from first- to third-person). I've always been interested in this period of history, but I'm really waiting to see what changes are wrought by the presence of the Kakureta Kao (oh, I hope I spelled that right--I was too lazy to pull out the book and look it up).

I feel sorry for the choice that Meiko has before her: to stay with Frank or go back to Japan with Matsuo. Neither one seems particularly happy since no matter who she stays with, she's going to hurt the other. I hope she ends up happy--poor kid deserves it.

Okay, back to reading once lunchtime rolls around.

Nip/Tuck's second season starts tonight at 10pm on FX!

For those of you that haven't seen it, it's great! Irreverent, shocking, sexy, funny and poignant.

Set in Miami (where I grew up), it's the story of two morally challenged plastic surgeons who are best friends. You get to see their personal lives and professional lives and how they intertwine.

It stars Julian McMahon, Dylan Walsh, Joelie Richardson and Roma Maffia.

The cast of the show is on the cover of TV guide this week with the headline: The Coolest Show on TV. Here's their review of the show: http://www.tvguide.com/tv/review/

If you haven't already, give it a try.
