Hi fellow collectors (Biggles, Aphew et al)
here's the UK proof of The Foundation. As anyone who collects UK 1sts knows, The Foundation 1st edition is notoriously hard to come by - it's the only UK 1st I don't have. I found this in Australia - not in mint condition but not bad.
Does anyone know of any other UK proofs for either hardbacks or paperbacks?
Steve

I am still in the middle of reading the Fifth Harmonic, and I am ejoying it quite a bit. Kind of an adventure/wilderness story, and I enjoy those a lot. I am still about halfway through it, but I noticed a mistake in the first part of the book.
After the protagonist discovers he has only a short time to live, he goes and visits Bordeaux. Totally understandable, as I am certain I would do the same thing. While there, he visits the Entre Deux Mers region, and talks about smelling the smells of the Sauvignon blanc crush. What a great thing to experience, IMO!! He then witnesses a lunar eclipse that changes his life.
Well, for those who don't know it, this lunar eclipse really happened. On August 11, 1999 this famous event occured over the Bordeaux region, and was even commemerated with a special engraved bottle released by Chateau Lafite. (As an aside, 99 Lafite is an average wine- don't waste your money. Nice bottle, though). Here is the problem: In all of Bordeaux, including the Entre Deux Mers, the harvest did not start until September 5th. The main character could not have smelled the crush, because the crush was still four weeks away. No grapes were picked before August 11th, because the rains had been very heavy up to the day before. (Of note, the eclipse marked a 3-4 week spell of clear weather, which ended in a bad hailstorm on Sep 5th, which was the start of the harvest. As a result of this odd weather pattern, 99 Bordeauxs are not the best of wines.)
Anyway- I love the book so far, as I love all of Dr Wilson's books. Just though I'd point this out for those who like to be extra geeky, like me.

Johnny Depp, a meek accountant, travels west to the town of Machine to take a new job only to find that the position he had been promised has been given away. His luck quickly goes bad and he finds himself wanted for multiple murders and on the run. He befriends a Native-American who is either very wise or non-sensical on his journey of escape.

This movie is in black and white and definitely has the flair of an independent movie. The heavy guitar soundtrack by Neil Young has some good moments but overall seems terribly inappropriate. The editing is very jumpy and most scene are very short before cutting away to the next scene. Despite these flaws I was drawn into this movie and was anxious to see what came next. Johnny Depp gives a compelling performance which effectively portrays the transformation of his character yet still conveys his weakness. I can't say that I totally liked (or maybe I didn't quite understand) the ending, but it made sense in the context of the story. I can't remember seeing a movie quite like this one and for that I have to give it credit. I don't know if I should "recommend" this movie as it probably depends largely on your tastes, but if this sounds interesting at all, you should give it a look.

7/10

The story has been told 1,000 times. Maybe 10,000 times. Maybe 1,000,000 times. Maybe--

Okay, I'll stop.

Here's that oft-told story: Young idealistic fellow comes to the big city, sees his dreams crushed by the powers that be, falls in with the downtrodden underclass, inspires them to cause changes in the system.

So don't go to Robots for the story. Go for the humor. It's funny. Sometimes very funny. My 6-yr-old grandson laughed throughout the whole 90 minutes -- loudest at the fart jokes, of course -- and I found myself laughing out loud a number of times myself.

A good time was had by all.

I wonder how you all respond to Paul's books.

I was on the subway the other day re-reading "The Haunted Air." I got so lost in the book that I quite literally forgot where I was. A sound distracted me and I looked up, baffled to find myself on a train. I was so in the experience of RJ, Lyle, Charlie and the Pomerols that I couldn't remember my destination, couldn't fix on whether I was traveling uptown or down, couldn't remember where I'd come from. The experience lasted for several seconds and was disorienting.

That is how deeply engrossed I become in Paul's books. He pulls me into his world and it becomes mine, to the point where I lose my own reality for a moment or two. What a trip! The perfect out of body experience!

How about you?

Very cool. I love surfing documentaries. This one is the history of surfing with special emphasis on the big wave riders.

These guys are crazy. Standing on a little board and flying down the face of a 60-foot wave at 35 mph is not my idea of fun. But it is fun to watch these adrenaline junkies do seemingly impossible feats.

This evening I went to see Shark Tale in theater, and I just got back from theater. Well......maybe almost people already saw this movie, but here in Japan, an opening day was last week. (Somebody will say "Too late, too late!") :p

This is very fun! If you like "Finding Nemo" and "Shreck", you'll like it.(Somebody will say "Of course!") Interesting things were characters and voice actors. Robert DeNiro's Don Lino, his character has a mole, like a DeNiro. Will Smith, Angelina Jolie, Renee Zellweger, their characters were similar to themselves. Especially, Martin Scorsese's Sykes, his character's eyebrow, high pitch speaking...that's definitely Martine Scorsese! Big Grin

Beautiful CG, good songs and music, funny characters, wonderful voice actors.....Lastly, I just wanna say one word, "Excellent!" Smile

This is coming from the same company doing the Keep comic, so support our friends in their other publishing endeavors. I'm not familiar with the writer or the interior artist but the covers look to be worth the price all by themselves. Here's the article Cool : http://newsarama.com/forums/showthread.p...adid=29345
