Infernal is a gr8 read but be advised that out of 351 pages the text starts on page 11 and at least 24 pages(got tired of counting) which are included in the page count are blank or may have only one word on the page. Should have just written a little more. Still a great book!

Hello,

This is fading news, and probably received enough national coverage that most of you are aware of it, but in case anyone's interested and didn't know, there was a terrible incident in Long Island a year ago where a woman driving a car was severely injured when a teen driving with other teens in a car ahead of hers threw a frozen turkey that went through her windshield, severely injuring and somewhat disfiguring her.

The subsequent trial was very dramatic, as the kid turned out to be a very weak-willed "follower" type who had been trying to be cool in order to earn a little of his peers' esteem, and (much more affectingly) when the victim requested a light sentence for him so that he could get on with his life, hopefully having learned something. That summary doesn't do justice to how moving and interesting the story, and the woman's words, were.

Anyway, here's a couple of cursory articles, from when the incident first happened, and after the sentencing last month:

***********SPOILER ALERT***************

I saw the movie when it opened, which was a week ago at least. I had to wait to write my comments because I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about it.

I liked "Jarhead," without a doubt. 3.5 stars out of 5. Yet something is missing. I am not entirely certain I got the point of view of the film. I left feeling there was a huge build up to a climax that never came, which I suspect is the point of the film.

The movie is about a young marine's experience in the first Gulf War, based on his book. It's beautiful to watch; there are striking images that will stay with me forever. When you see the horse, you'll understand. We watch Jake Gyllenhaal as he enlists in the Marines for no good reason and is chosen to be a sniper. He is sent to the Gulf to fight a war that never quite happens, at least for him and his outfit.

The boredom, the commraderie, the training, the boredom, the creative ways they found to counteract the boredom, the constant hydration in the desert, the boredom....all are exquistely documented. I wasn't bored, as I've read that various reviewers were. It's just that Mendes, the director, creates his reality very well. You're right there with those young Marines and their crusty and trusted staff sargent, Jamie Foxx. You feel what they feel, which is a whole lot of nothing and frustration and longing for home and waiting, waiting, waiting for what never comes.

It's an odd movie in that I still can't figure if it's an anti-war film. There was no war as we know it from a thousand war movies.

The acting was superb. I especially liked Peter Sarsgaard, whom I've enjoyed in every role he's played. I wouldn't be surprised if he picks up an Oscar nomination for supporting actor.

I left the movie feeling conflicted, and I suspect that is exactly what the director wanted.

I did like "Jarhead," though, make no mistake about that.

KONG!

In addition to the remastering from a pristine print, the bonus features alone are worth the price of the whole set. PETER JACKSON HAS RECREATED THE LONG-LOST SPIDER SEQUENCE!!!

AIIIIEEEE!

(Can you tell I'm just a little bit excited? Back in the 50s my brother and I watched a heavily edited version of King Kong 11 times in one week when it was in continuous rotation on WOR's Million Dollar Movie. I loooooove this movie.)

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I recently finished reading Deep As The Marrow. Is the only connection to Legacies the pine barrens? Actually, if you want to get picky, I think that All The Rage has more of a connection as far as the barrens go. Am I really missing something, or what?

I'm sure there was a thread on this movie already but I didn't read it. In fact I read nothing on this movie anywhere or heard reviews from friends. I was able to watch this flick with little or no spoilers.

Ooookaaay...I liked it because it felt different even though it wasn't really something totally new. It certainly wasn't Oscar material but fairly well done. Rob Zombie can be a pretty sick SOB and I can only imagine what this film would've been like if Hollywood hadn't held him back. Some of the dialogue was really funny and the actors were pretty good. I think he was trying to break Tarentino's record for use of the F-bomb in a film. Oh, and Mrs. Zombie is quite the looker - a bit like a younger Elizabeth Shue. Zoiks!! This movie can be quite gross at times so if you've a weak stomach, stay away! It's a crazy ride but fun if you find films like this entertaining. Worth the rent but not sure yet if I'd buy it.

I have been a fan of F Paul Wilson’s for several years now and starting with the Tomb, read all of the Repairman Jack novels. While it seems kinda romantic to be someone selected by the great powers of the universe to be their “hand” in matters, and really an intense experience to live off the books like Jack does, is it really plausible for someone who isn't a criminal? I hope that doesn't sound too naive, but Jack lives in a whole other world.

How is he ever going to move back to legitimate society? I was thinking about this when Jack starts to consider it when he falls in love and wants to be Vicki’s dad, etc. It looked as if Wilson was going to chart a path back for Jack, but it must have been too conventional, implausible or something, maybe impossible, because with the last novel, being formally pronounced the ONE, he’ll forever be some sort of Emissary.

I got ahold of the new version today. I love Johnny Depp even back in the 21 Jumpstreet days I was a huge fan of his. If you havn't seen this yet, it's definitly worth a view, I think it's a little more violent than the original. If you have young kids you may want to preview it first, there's just a few scenes I was suprised to see.

* Minor Spoilers* Minor Spoilers* Minor Spoilers*

I think the disappointment came with the lack of creativity in the ending vs the older 1971 version. I'm not going ot give away either movies, but take a gander at both movies, and you don't feel that special majic from the second movie.

I really thought they blew off a lot of the craziness. I did not like the Umpa-Lumpas. The 1971 song was great, I can mumble through the chorus to this day. The new ones are totally revamped with no relavence to the old song. The 1971 boat they use to sail down the chocolate river is cheezy, but it looks the part. The new one is just rediculous looking, and there is a new theory in the new one on how the Umpa Lumpa's came to live.

While the new Depp version is not a complete disaster in my mind. It still did stay true to the older movie, which was a good thing. My disliking of the movie was not a result staying true, but a dull meaningless ending they created in the new version was just crap. They really could have saved the movie for me keeping the ending like the 1971 one. Luckily, they still keep a moral to the story for the kids, but it doesn't seem to really have been like 1971 did.
