And they say Hollywood has run out of great ideas

"Welcome Back, Kotter" and John Travolta are headed for the big screen but not together. Variety reports that Ice Cube will star in "Welcome Back, Kotter" (as the title character originated by Gabe Kaplan), and Travolta has been tapped (though not yet signed) to play J.R. Ewing in the movie adaptation of "Dallas" alongside Jennifer Lopez (as Sue Ellen Ewing) and Luke Wilson (as Bobby Ewing).

Directing the "Kotter" movie for the Weinstein Brothers will be Tom Brady of "The Hot Chick" fame (no word on who’ll play Arnold Horshack), while "Monster-in-Law" director Robert Luketic is making "Dallas" for Fox.

With such high-powered talent involved, how could these remakes possibly stink? After all, the TV-to-movies bar was set pretty high with last year’s "Bewitched," "The Honeymooners" and "The Dukes of Hazzard."

(Gulp.)

If Travolta actually stars in "Dallas," filming will have to wait till he’s done stepping into Divine’s (and Harvey Fierstein’s) shoes as hefty transvestite Edna Turnblad in the musical remake of "Hairspray."

Travolta has been waiting years to star in a musical, trying to launch a "Guys and Dolls" or "Pal Joey" remake and turning down the Richard Gere role in "Chicago" because it wasn’t big enough.

Edna Turnblad, bless her heart, is big enough.

Yet somehow I picture Travolta calling career-revival specialist Quentin Tarantino after the double whammy of "Hairspray" and "Dallas" — unless someone offers him a "Gomer Pyle" movie first.
Ice Cube as Gabe Kotter?!?! WTF?!?!

I know, I know...Paul is releasing this under his name, but I couldn't wait. I found a copy on Amazon that I swiped up for 5 bucks. I will buy it again when it is released under his moniker but I really want to read this story.

At least I think I ordered the book. I just got an email confirming my order for a virgin mail-order bride direct from the Republique of Togolaise. Her name appears to be an indecipherable mesh of clicks and whistles but apparently she can cook.

Oh well, I'll wait and see.

So, I went to the local cineplex to check out the Sci-fi action flick known as "Ultraviolet" What I should have done was pulled my car up to the theater entrance, rolled down my window, extracted eight crisp one dollar bills, crumpled them up, threw them out the window, and sped off.

Written and directed by Kurt Wimmer of the Equilibrium fame, I was thoroughly looking forward to his next venture in film-making. I was a huge fan of the grittiness and comprimising look of the future, displayed in Equilibrium. Everything that made Equilibrium a great film, the excellent story, which seemed to be a tip of the hat to such literary works like 1984 and Farenheit 451, and the impressive acting was greatly lacking in Ultraviolet.

Another endearing quality from Equilibrium was the lack of a monsterous budget. Wimmer seemed to work better with the meager budget allocated to him prior to this film (Ultraviolet). It was a true testament to his ability as a film-maker. Ultraviolet seemed to have a bigger budget and this appears to have greatly hurt the film.

It appears that the movie was shot completely digital, so by me using the term "film" is not quite accurate. The colors were completely over-saturated, causing the characters to have a strange halo effect around their faces. I do not know if this was intentional, but it looked like pure shit. Fitting, since the script itself seemed to be written in human biological waste. If you are going to shoot a big-budget digital film, go ahead and splurge a bit for a decent camera, such as the new Genesis digital camera.

I would like to say that there was at least one saving grace to this movie. I have always found Milla Jovavich strangely attractive. But Milla, please, eat a damn sandwich already. And maybe a few hours in the sunlight wouldn't hurt either.

A bit about the story I suppose. In the future, the government is trying to eradicate a race of super-beings known as hemophages, or vampires. Not just your normal run of the mill vampires. These vampires can walk around in daylight, can be killed with a simple bullet or a sword, have fangs, but do not drink blood, and appear to be no stronger than your typical human, sans the title character who is virtually unstoppable. Ultraviolet intercepts a package from a courrier service which contains a weapon that could spell certain doom for all hemophages. Inside the small, flat package in a 12 year old boy...Huh?

The boy is a genetic expierement with altered DNA. Of course this DNA is the weapon mentioned just a moment ago. the little boy, named six is portrayed by the stoic Cameron Bright, previously seen in the absolutely craptacular film "Birth" starring Nicole Kidman. After Ultraviolet discovers the weapon, she has some decisions to make. This should have been the shortest film in history. She is a brutal killer; if she wants to survive, destroy the weapon. I wish she would have. I am opposed to films that portray gratuitious violence against children, but if it means ending my misery of sitting through the remaining hour of this movie, I say waste the little shit.

It was not meant to be though. Morals prevailed. My suffering continued.

If you have any friends who say..."Hey, lets go see Ultraviolet", gently lean over, and bite hard and deep into their cheek. Trust me, they will thank you later.

Last year director Alexandre Aja burst onto the Hollywood scene with his grisly but misguided tale of intensity in High Tension (Haute Tension).

2006 marked his return to the genre with the remake of Wes Craven's drive-in shocker The Hills Have Eyes.

I don't recall much of the original save for some rather human looking mutants stalking a family who broke down in the middle of the desert. The general premise is the same here but elements have been added which were not present in the original.

Of these elements are the massive amounts of gore strewn liberally through the movie which include animal cruelty, rape, cannibalism, torture and a slow burning death scene that had me scrambling for my sunblock.

The cast ranges in age from middle aged parents to mid-twenties daughters to a teenage son and 2 dogs German Sheps. All competent actors but like any horror movie cast highly forgetable.

The true star of this film is not the family or the disfigured mutants (Miners who refused to leave the area prior to nuclear bomb drop-testing in the 40's and 50's.) The star of the film is the level of intensity the film maintains throughout, a throwback to Aja's freshman effort Tension during the first half hour.

This film simply does not let up. Not on the sense of impending doom or the grisly mayhem that ensues. The carnage is so brutal that I had to stop eating my Reese's Pieces at one point and any film that makes me stop eating is a force to be reckoned with. (Unless it is a film by Uwe Bolle, then I go on a hunger strike unless Hollywood stops giving him money.)

The story seems to teeter on the verge of drama, the script creates a believeable family dynamic. The curmudgeon father, a retired cop tough-guy who loves his family and wants what's best for them. A mother who was once a 60's free-spirit but gave up the life to raise a family on Christian-based values. The two daughters, one with her husband and child in tow and another, the pot smoking slut who would rather be partying it up in Cancun then on the roadtrip to celebrate the parents 25th year of marriage. Then there is the youngest son, a teenager who seems a mix of everyone in the family. Part smart-mouth, part responsible young man on the verge of becoming an adult unbeknownst to him that he will be forced to assume the latter role much sooner than anticipated.

Then there are the 2 dogs, Beauty and Beast who are as much a part of the family as the children themselves and Beast is aptly named for reasons best left unsaid to prevent any spoilers.

The film itself is a washed out and bright piece of work. The desert scenes had me gulping down my beverage for fear of dehydration.

So is it a perfect horror film? No, the jump scares are cheap and the musical queue accompanying the scenes are too loud and come across annoying. The overall sound is phenomenal though and takes advantage of a well-equipped theaters sound system. Voices come at you from the left and then the right and the viewer feels encircled by the bad guys, especially when they start whispering. It could be said that the sound was 3-Dimensional in certain scenes and used to terrifying effect.

The violence is unflinching and in your face with many cringe-worthy moments that starts with the skull cracking opening to the blood soaked finale.

There are many "Yeah right" moments, most notably the son's ability to assemble an explosive contraption that would give MacGuyver a run for his money but those moments are forgivable because the rest of the movie simply kicks-ass.

The Hills Have Eyes is the closest thing to a perfect horror movie I have seen, though it borrows heavily from atmospheres in more recent horrors like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. I for one look forward to Aja growing into the director he shows promise to be.

Hills has done for breaking down in an isolated nuclear testing town full of mutant killers stalking the innocent what Jaws did for swimming in open waters. Big Grin

All right, like all sleazy advertising that's a bit much, but still: The very courageous Sgt. Gong employed the same trick Jack did in Infernal to stop a gunman. Apparently it's a technique taught to the NYPD. (Is this the trick F. Paul thanks Ken for in the book dedication?)

Hey there all, just finished reading the Keep and i really enjoyed it. For me the only way i can describe it was good fun. I thi k it was agreat story with great heroes and villains alike. It got me hooked and kept me interested from the very beginning.

love the whole idea of the sword and beings from the first age and him not being a true vampire bloodsucker but a vampire of a different kind.

i dont know to me it all added up to page turning fun.

for my next endeavor i am going into Repairman Jack beginning with the Tomb which should be arriving from Amazon today.

and also, i am working on writing my own novel, not really in the horror genre more of an international spy mystery called Project Archangel but it is fun to do.

have a great day everyone and i cant wait to start thw Tomb
