Just now I watched "Masked and Anonymous". I'm sure Bluesman Mike will love this movie! This movie was made for Bob Dylan fan. Well, but it's not only for his fan. For all music fan, too.

In near future, in a dictatorship nation, one man went free from jail. His name is Jack Fate. He is musician. His manager, Uncle Sweethart have a plan for charity concert. So Sweethart invited him to concert. But......

Bob Dylan played Jack Fate, of course. As I said, this is Bob Dylan's movie. He is main character. But other casting were also great. Jeff Bridges, Penelope Cruz, John Goodman, Jessica Lange, Luke Wilson, Val Kilmer, Mickey Rourke, Cristian Slater & Chris Pen(from True Romance?), and Ed Harris! I think they are Bob Dylan's fan. Big Grin

If you realized who's Ed Harris, you are awesome.

Bluesman Mike, if you haven't seen it yet, check it! It won't disappoint you. Wink

I rarely see Japanese movies, but for some reason I found this in rental store, it was "Matango".

"Huh? Matango?!"

I took up it from shelf, and I saw details on package. Then I realized it was original story by William Hope Hodgson! Gosh! I didn't know Japanese film maker did make movie by W.H.H's story. I rented it and saw it.

If you spotted it in a rental store, check it! As you see the title, it seems comedy(Killer Tomatoes). But.....No! It was weird and some scenes were scary.

See the details.

Has anyone since this odd film? Can anyone tell me why it was made? Didn't like it and can't recommend it.

Ultimately a brilliant version of Superman II. Lester's version (which was the original released version) had a lot more visual gags that Donner never intended. This cut of the film feels more integrated with Superman: The Movie.

*** SPOILER AHEAD ***

My only complaint is the return to the diner at the end after Superman reverses time. The people at the diner act as if they know Clark Kent but with time reversed they shouldn't. And Superman shouldn't feel the need to take revenge on a bully... it's beneath him. I think this cut of Superman II would have been stronger with this short sequence eliminate.

*** END SPOILERS ***

For anyone who likes the Superman films this is definitely a must see. It's interesting to see how two different directors can influence the same movie differently.

usually my Spam filters get everything, but maybe this one was just special in a slightly Otherness sort of way...

Got an email today touting thebenefits of RELASOM; "Get to Sleep, Stay Asleep". It was just too close not to post!

BTW- what happened to the Isher Sports Shop mugs on prodcuts site? Bought some for a friend a while back and he dropped one, need to replace it and maybe get some for myself and they aren't there anymore.

I selected best 10 movies in 2006.(Theatrical release only)

1, Letters from Iwo Jima/Flags of Our Fathers

2, Crash

3, Children of Men

4, Histry of Violence

5, Hotel Rwanda

6, V for Vendetta

7, The Da Vinci Code

8, Good Night and Good Luck

9, The Exorcism of Emily Rose

10, MI:III

Some of them were made in 2005, but they were released in 2006 in Japan.

"Letters from Iwo Jima" and "Flags of Our Fathers" were made by different point of view, but I thought they were same movies, so I picked two movies in 1st ranking.

This year, a lot of movies were political movies/violence movies. Hotel Rwanda, Good night and Good luck, Munich, Syriana, The Constant Gardener, V for Vendetta....etc. So generally movies of 2006 had dark mood. But they were good.

Worst movies in 2006

1, Alone on the Dark
2, BloodRayne
3, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
4, Rose in Tideland
5, Proof

What's yours? Smile

Julia Roberts, Steve Buscemi, John Cleese, Oprah Winfrey, Kathy Bates, Reba McEntire, Robert Redford, Cedric the Entertainer, Thomas Haden Church, and...Dakota Fanning. What a awesome casting!

Today, after I saw Casino Royale, I had spare time. So I saw "Charlotte's Web". And, it was......wow! What a nice movie! It reminded me of "Babe". But "Charlotte's Web" was better than "babe". At first, I thought this is the movie for kids. But I was wrong. I really enjoyed it, and I had some surprising moments. Robert Redford as horse's voice....? I've never seen he played in family/fantasy movie as voice of animal. And Steve Buscemi as rat was also hilarious. Big Grin

I highly recommend it to you and your kids. But even if you haven't kids, I recommend it to you. This is a fun movie.

I recommend "The Good Shepherd," a somewhat flawed telling of the creation of the CIA. It is overly long. I was aware of the length of the film as I watched it, which is not a good sign. But, in spite of its length, I was pulled in and it didn't let me go. Given that the story is about a cold, tight-lipped, unfeeling character with an absence of morals who helped co-create the CIA, it's a testament to DeNiro's direction that I remained interested.

Matt Damon managed to find some slight wiggle room within his tightly buttoned down performance, so that while his character gives away nothing, we are able to see something working within. What we see is not pleasant. He's a man so dedicated to his job and his sense of protecting America for Americans and from anyone else, that he's absolutely at ease with needing to give up his family and all close ties. In fact, any close tie becomes a liability in his trade, and throughout the movie I was filled with foreboding about what would happen to anyone in Damon's life.

What little openess there is in Damon's character (a tragic incident early in his life sets him up as a secret keeper) becomes increasingly pinched as his circle of trust decreases until he has only himself in his closed off, emotionally truncated world. What a horrible way to live. He's warned to get out while he still has a soul.

There are cameos galore, Keir Dullea, for instance (whom I haven't seen in years) plays Angelina Jolie's father, a role with no lines. Jolie is miscast but does what she can with her underwritten character. I've become very fond of watching Alec Baldwin and William Hurt in juicy supporting roles, and I was rewarded in this film.

The movie is set up as a series of flashbacks taking place from the vantage point of Spring, 1961 and the Bay of Pigs fiasco. Many reviewers have written that the flashbacks were disorienting and unnecessary. I didn't think so. You do have to stay alert to follow the film, but what's the problem with that?

Damon's character is known as "Mother" to the Russians. His Russian counterpart is known as "Ulysses" to the Americans. Their relationship over the years is the best part of the film. Interestingly, neither one ages over the 20+ years covered in the film. Everyone else does, but not those two.

The CIA seems to have had its beginnings in the Skull and Bones Society, a super secret fraternity at Yale based in homoerotic hazings and a profound sense of WASP superiority. In fact, I actually had the thought that all those white guys looked alike. There is a great line that Damon says to Joe Pesci's Italian mob character whom Damon is trying to recruit to help him prior to the Bay of Pigs invasion. I won't repeat the line here so you'll hear it fresh should you see the film. But suffice it to say, Damon's character is driven to do what he does buttressed by the thought that America really belongs to him and his fellow WASPs.

It's a long, dark, cold film about a cold, dark subject peopled with cold, dark hearted characters. Overall, I think it succeeds.
