I don't expect a lot from a novel. Or a movie. Or a televsion show. What I do expect is that they have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Especially an end.

The end is where you get to actually judge the author or creator. If they've written themself into a corner, you want to see how creatively they escape -- and you give them kudos when they do it well. Sometimes, you pick up a novel and it doesn't end at all, and you have to pick up the next novel in the series to see what happens next, and then that one doesn't end at all, and so on. Peter Hamilton is an author I now refuse to read for just that reason. David Gerrold, the same. Elizabeth Moon is fast approaching that distinction.

A television series that runs seven or eight years, then ANNOUNCES they are concluding the series on a specific night and clues in everyone that they shot three different endings so no one would know how it ends.....

...owes you an ending.

Instead, it just stopped.

Maybe the creators thought that was clever. I think it shows how non-creative, inane, and disrespectful they actually were. I don't know whether to blame just those creators or HBO in general.

It's a good lesson on how television is ultimately a waste of an individual's time. Maybe that is the moral of the story.

Oh. I forgot to explain BRJDDs. When I was young and something sucked really bad, we used to say it sucked big red juicy donkey (well, I'm sure you get the idea by now)...

Background: A couple of months ago I got my wife to start reading the RJ series and now, the Adversary Series. When she finishes a book we always discuss how she liked it and other thoughts about it. She finished REBORN today and during our regular discussion she posed two questions that I could not answer so I thought I would pass them on to you.
First: The events in REBORN, if I recall my time line, take place around 1968, it doesn’t have to be exact, just that general time period. Twice in the book it mentions dialing 911. Did they really have 911 in the late 60’s or even the early 70’s?
Second: If Rosalom was able to enter into the clone fetus because it didn’t have a soul, how can the series dismiss GOD since the soul is a religious concept?

I'm curious about the editing process at the ARC level -- how much do the books change between the time that ARC escapes the publisher, and the final proofs are made for the HC version? As my wife is a bookseller, we've had the opportunity to pick up quite a number of ARCs (a couple of yours, over the years), and I wonder if I'm missing anything.

I know ARCs are always labeled "Quote this at the risk of your life and sanity" but do they really change much? Is it just typos, or is it like the movie biz where whole scenes may be dropped in our left on the editing room floor? It's not like you need a temp-track or pencil-test effects for a pre-release, that all happens in my grey matter at either level.

Also, do you get a chance to edit again before a mass market edition? I've seen on Charles Stross' blog (http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/index.html) he asks for people to find the groty misspellings between the HC and PB, but do you ever regret a phrase out of Jack's mouth, or decide to purple-up the prose of a vampire, etc.?

Thanks,
Joel

Okay, let me say one thing. At first, I didn't intend to see this movie. Will Smith is Robert Neville? C'mon! Are you serious? Who the hell is a casting director?

But today I saw the trailer. Then I realized I was wrong. This movie will be great flick! The opening is December? Oh, man! I can't wait!

I wish Richard Matheson get more well-known in Japan by this movie. Smile

If you like animation you should definitely check out Tsui Hark's A Chinese Ghost Story. It is a non-stop visual feast, combining animation with CGI, that also provides a little mental meat to gnaw on. It is also kid friendly.

Besides Mr. Brooks, I also saw Knocked Up. This movie is outloud funny. Don't want to spoil it for you, but I can assure you that it's worth the bucks to check this flick out at the theater.

AC

P.S. If you liked 40 Year Old Virgin, you'll love this flick.
