Apparently, Ed Norton will play the good Dr. Banner. I still say he's Jack. Oh, and he turned down the role of Harvey Dent to play Bruce.

The Mad American 06-25-2007, 10:35 AM
Anyone seen this movie? AMC has their Sci-Friday line up in which they mostly play the normal line up of OK to bad scifi/horror movies.

Well, this last Friday night, with Gracie sleeping on my shoulder (she is getting her last teeth in, her eye teeth and they are really causing her some discomfort, so that means lots of snuggle time with Dad...not a bad thing really), I was flipping through the channels and came across this movie.

I don't remember this movie ever being in theaters or seeing a preview trailer for it, but that doesn't mean much with the state of my memory these days.

Anyway, on to the movie. It is a ghost story that takes place on an American Submarine in WWII. Without adding any spoilers I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised by this movie. It was more subtle then almost any ghost story movie I have seen recently and really played well for me.

Maybe my expectations of movies is just lowered because of all the recent garbage that is put out but I was very happy to find this little gem. Going to have to look for this one on DVD to add to my collection.

Anyone else seen this?

Was reading the IMDb message board for The Keep, and came across an interesting thread that was asking if F Paul Wilson ripped off/was inspired by an old TV programme when he wrote the novel The Keep.

The TV programme was called Rod Serling's Night Gallery, and the episode in question is called The Devil Is Not Mocked.

Here is the IMDb thread, and here is the teleplay with screen grabs.

I think it's a pretty creepy little story, and some of the surface details are similar, but I think it's a bit rich to say The Keep is a rip-off.

Non-Spoiler Review

Well now! After the disaster that was Fantastic Four II last Friday, I cut out of work early yesterday to view this puppy...and, in the end, the payoff is there.

1408 is based on same-titled short story by Horror Emperor Stephen King. Starring John Cusack as “Mike Enslin” - a skeptical divorced middle-aged author, it is the fast-paced tale of a man who finds himself trapped within the confines of a presumed “weird” hotel room, while researching the latest in a string of smarmy non-fiction opuses on haunted establishments.

1408 is directed by Mikael Hafstrom and written by Matt Greenberg, Scott Alexander, and Larry Karaszewski.

The early highlight of the film is Mike's confrontation with Samuel L. Jackson’s wonderfully performed Hotel Manager, who lays out 1408’s expository prologue with style, relish, and creepy gravitas.

After that, Mike’s hotel room stay becomes not only a journey into the mystery that is 1408, but an examination of his own soul...and his own demons.

Yes, at times the themes and visuals in this flick touch upon familiar ground...a couple of old Twilight Zone episodes spring to mind, a season one episode of Star Trek The Next Generation, and, of course, King’s own “The Shining.” However, I found that these nit-pics are more than made up for by 1408 walking its own path, separate from the recent maze of splatter-punk and torture-porn R-rated films that have filled the big screen slate of late.

Ultimately, it is the strengh of Cusack’s acting that makes this flick work so well. It is really a one-man show. This thespian, stuck inside a large amount of screen time, all by himself, sinks his claws into our interest (as viewers), and never lets go.

I give this movie, four out of five cans of diet cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper.

Today, afternoon, I'm going to a theatre see "Live Free or Die Hard" (aka: "DIE HARD 4.0). Check this.

I guess some people(well, almost everybody) haven't interest to this sequel. But I was waiting for this one for a long time. "DIE HARD 3" wasn't good(at least, for me). I hope this "4.0" is better than "3".

I decided to take the initiative and start this thread. I hope enough people have read it by now, but just in case, I'll make sure to include a spoiler space.

**SPOILERS**

That should be enough. Anyway...

So what did everyone think about these new developments? Jonah Stevens sure got around and the oDNA was very intriguing. If people like Jonah and even Jack are loaded with this oDNA then does this mean they're descendant from beings from the Otherness? Furthermore, from what side of the family could Jack have gotten all his oDNA from? His father's or his mother's, or maybe both? Jack has always possessed a pocket of darkness inside him that tends to cloud the sides of his vision whenever he truly gets angry, and now I guess we know why.

Question: Is all oDNA a product of the Otherness, or could some also be a product of the Ally? If that's the case, then could there be a slim possibility that Jack could be a descendant of Glaeken or maybe even Rasalom? That's probably presumptuous, but it's definitely something to think about.

All in all, this was another fantastic plot and story. I especially loved the tension created by the fact that Jack has yet to tell Gia that the "accident" that almost took her and Vicky's life, and killed her unborn child, was no accident. I can't imagine how she'll react when she finally finds out.

Finally, I presume that the old man that's been spying on Jack is Glaeken?

Anyway, with all the loose ends from this book waiting to be tied up, the next book ought to be a real milestone.
