I just got a notice from Amazon that Midnight Mass (the regular hardcover, not the fancy one) has shipped. I thought it wasn't coming out until April. What a nice surprise.

I'm a big fan of the Repairman series but I am unable to find either The Tomb or The Haunted Air in any of the Chapters/Indigo locations in Toronto. Are these books in print? (Especially the Tomb). I have the rest of the collection and have seen Gateways for sale in hard cover but would like to pick up its predecessor first. I'd rather not buy online but may have too. Are there distribution issues with Canada?

This is a very good movie. The disturbing images actually make you laugh. And Jim Carrey tones down his acting and delivers a real character that you both like and dislike. The Sci-Fi does not need any special effects; it works because the actors dive into it as if it were another day at the office. I hope you go see it. I'm dying to hear other opinions on it.

And it's the same number (5) as my other one, so I guess they kept me down for the same one. Smile I can't wait to read it again. It'll be like a new book because I haven't read it since I was about 16.

Last night I watched the the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show that was on VH1 the other night. I wouldn't normally watch it (and don't currently have cable), but a friend of mine insisted. For any big rock and roll fans I have to recommend watching it if (when) VH1 rebroadcasts it. The induction speech by Bruce Springsteen for Jackson Browne is incredible. Humorous, nostalgic, gracious, etc. And Jackson Browne's acceptance speech is pretty darn good too. I was even impressed by Prince, who I am normally not a big fan of. Other bright spots: Tom Petty/Jeff Lynne inducting and tribute of George Harrison (for solo work), ZZ Top (inducted by a "feelin'-good" Keith Richards). Low points: Alicia Keyes induction speech for Prince, Dave Matthews' incoherent rambling, Bob Seger's not-so-good performance.

Anyway, check it out, at least for the Springsteen/Browne part.

(Interesting fact: George Harrison (My favorite Beatle by far) was the first ex-Beatle to have a #1 album)

I am fairly new to the works of Dr. Wilson (and I love what I've read so far!). I've read the first three (?) Repairman Jack novels (I think it's three; the next one on the list is "All the Rage"), and some of the "Adversary" books, as well as "Sims." I am currently reading "The Barrens and Others." I read "Faces" this morning (and, for me, the good doctor succeeded in what he said he set out to do in the introduction). This is the second or third time that I've come across a mention of something happening to pregnant women in the town of Monroe in 1968 (and if my head weren't so stuffed up, I could maybe think of where the other mentions were). My question is: is an explanation offered somewhere as to what exactly happened (i.e. another book or story that I perhaps haven't read yet). Just curious.

Thank you.

Kind of weird that a movie about a man who returns from death has been replaced by a movie about a whole bunch of folks returning from the dead.

Any moment now I expect someone at Beacon Films to say, "Hey, resurrection is HOT! Let's kill Jack and bring him back!"

Finally saw this weird little movie. I think that if I'd watched it on hallucinogenics, I'd have been a little more . . . traumatized as opposed to entertained. Definitely an odd movie. Some of it worked, some of it didn't, and some that I thought didn't early on ended up working later in the film.

I suppose I recommend it, if only to have people say "The hell?" right along with me.

And for those who have seen it, any idea what was in that box?

Just got back from it. Generally it was fun but not very scary. The scariest thing was probably the four or five babies that started commicating by wailing to each other across the theater.

The film started off strong but sort of fell flat towards the end. It's cliched modern horror (no actual surprises or anything) and is much less violent then the original. The majority of the violence (and I don't think I'm the only one who thinks gorefest when it comes to the Dead series) is bullets to the head. I would say there was only one real nasty death (re-death?) in the entire film.

And the ending? Please, someone explain to me how they knew what boat to go to! That was probably one of the dumbest things in the entire movie. Give then some clue as to what boat to get to... an alarm system or something!

I'd say check out the original. Much better. And, incidentally, original.

I just saw this last night and I want to know if anyone else has seen it and, if so, what you thought?

As always Johnny Depp was amazing as was Turturro (sic?). It was well paced and had some good scares and psychological tension in it. My big problem was the ending.

The thing most annoying was the twist. Yeah, okay, Depp is crazy but you sort of pick up on this throughout the film. But it was when his ex-wife (or soon-to-be) comes to the cabin and sees "Shooter" written on everything. Okay... cool... Shooter, shoot her... all good... but then why in the hell does he come at her with a pair of scissors??? It should have been a gun and we know he was one. His agent/bodyguard even makes mention of it at one point ("pull out your six-shooter"). I've never read the novella so I don't know how accurate this was but that was my biggest disappointment with the film.

Thoughts?
