Hey, I'm back. Got in this morning. Slept till four p.m. Then went to see Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole, the latest 3-D movie. Never read the books, but the trailers interested me: Seeks the legend only to become the legend he seeks. Cool.

Anyway... Great 3-D. Doesn't talk down to you as does Alpha/Omega, which has cool 3-D but pre-teen dialog.

Big surprise: There's a new Roadrunner/Coyote cartoon before the movie IN 3-D. Warner Bros.' cartoons are back. CGI, not traditional animation, but the spirit of the cartoon is there; they've captured the Coyote's gadgets in fine funny form.

Give this movie line-up an A. Well-done. I hope to see the Bugs, Daffy, Porky, et al very very soon.

I saw this film today, it was most enjoyable, there was a bit of a love story, and some revenge, I liked the revenge bit. The love story made me cry at one part. Awww. There is action and a good story, well filmed and directed. It is about robbing banks and things.

(Possible) Spoiler

I am in the middle of re-reading "Night World" and came across a reference to a character named Lenny winter. He was a neighbor of Sylvia's at Toad Hall.

For some reason that name sounded very familiar to me, outside the "Night World" reference, and can't seem to place why.

My question is this: does Lenny Winter appear in some other book; possibly one of the Adversary Cycle? I have re-read "The Keep", "Reborn" and "Reprisal" the past month, but not "The Touch".

His name might just seem familiar becasue I have read "Night World" so many times over the past 10 years.

Can anyone help me out?

It's about that time; when can we expect it to become available?

Anyone seen this one yet? I have a perverse desire to see it even though I know it is going to suck and have some kind of stupid explanation/ending that will leave me hugely disappointed.

I just started participating in this forum a few days ago. It's a neat forum that I am going to keep in my internet circuit.

Anyway, on to the point of the post. Every year my wife and I take a small vacation to take a break from life. These vacations usually involve driving 5-7 hours north to get away from the humidity of the deep south. On these trips we usually pick up an audio book. On our trip last summer we chose By the Sword. She was unfamiliar with the RPJ series, so I enjoyed explaining the intracacies of the plot to her. (As you can tell by the length of this post, the sound of my own voice can keep me occupied indefinately.) After the book finished, she asked a great question. "Do I think they would ever make a movie about the book(s) of RPJ series?" What was really interesting though was where this discussion eventually led.

I do not think a movie would do justice to an involved series like RPJ. I think the format would have to be something closer to the series carried on Showtime or HBO like a Dexter or Sopranos. The brilliance of Wilson's series is in the minutiae. Its the intricate web that prevents the reader from having to make huge leaps of faith that make them unique. He builds a slippery slope that you can naturally slide down. So to have a successful translation to a medium like film a feel like you have got to be able to step outside of the usual time constraints associated with a movie or small series. You have to have enough time to educate the viewing audience of all the background themes at play.

Then the real question came to the forefront who would play Jack and who would play Gia?

The actor to play Jack has to be able to understate his acting. He has to fit the role of "ordinary joe." He cannot be overly charismatic and still be true to the character. At the same time, he has to be able to turn on the charisma and rage and emotion that is sometimes necessary in the novels.

So the question is, do you agree with the format? And who do you pick to play Jack and Gia?

I haven't figured out the Jack yet, but I like Shannon Sossamon for Gia.

A reader pointed me toward this. It's very odd but very cool. I can't call it a review. Here's a guy who sells flooring comparing his business philosophy to Jack's "repairs' business. The wonderful thing about this blog entry is how he clearly gets it.

Here's a review of the 1964 movie, ZULU, that condemns it for its historical inaccuracy. I know the movie wasn't historically perfect, you know, a bit Hollywoodized, but nothing close to what this reviewer says. What do you think? Those of you familiar with the movie: Is he right? I think he is politicizing the film. Imagine what he'd do to the Godfather or The Alamo.

Anyway... would appreciate some feedback.

P.S. I'm on the plane tomorrow morning, heading for the big immigration reform meeting. Hope I have time for a stopover in New York. See you all back here on Friday. Gots to be back in time for my first day back at work on Saturday when the Fall quarter begins for me. As you may know, Governor Arnold closed the colleges down for the summer. SAD! I gained five pounds, dammit.

Anyone else watching this classic? Some of the episodes are older than me, but even though the show is the complete opposite in taste of everything else in my life I can't help but love it! Must be that old orange and white little DoH guitar with the plastic strings I had when I was about 3 that endeared it to me.
