Here's a review of the 1964 movie, ZULU, that condemns it for its historical inaccuracy. I know the movie wasn't historically perfect, you know, a bit Hollywoodized, but nothing close to what this reviewer says. What do you think? Those of you familiar with the movie: Is he right? I think he is politicizing the film. Imagine what he'd do to the Godfather or The Alamo.

Anyway... would appreciate some feedback.

P.S. I'm on the plane tomorrow morning, heading for the big immigration reform meeting. Hope I have time for a stopover in New York. See you all back here on Friday. Gots to be back in time for my first day back at work on Saturday when the Fall quarter begins for me. As you may know, Governor Arnold closed the colleges down for the summer. SAD! I gained five pounds, dammit.

Anyone else watching this classic? Some of the episodes are older than me, but even though the show is the complete opposite in taste of everything else in my life I can't help but love it! Must be that old orange and white little DoH guitar with the plastic strings I had when I was about 3 that endeared it to me.

Has anyone seen this?

Today I saw it in a theatre. It was strangely funny movie, and it was... "More of this is true than you would believe"

The story is about secret unit within the US Army called "The First Earth Battalion". They were also known as Jedi Warriors. Big Grin

I'm not sure this is a true story or not true. But the script is perfect, engaging and occasionally poignant.

George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Ewan McGregor, and Kevin Spacy. They showed excellent performances as usual. Especially, Clooney had charismatic personality and inscrutable demeanor.

This is not big budget film, but it has worth to see.

Several years ago, I began work on an in-depth compendium for all the "Adversary Cycle" and "Repairman Jack" books and short stories.

Due to some very serious personal reasons, I ended the project.

Over the last month or so, I discovered my old notes and decided to begin it again.

As I was searching the net for useful information/insights etc, I came across this site:
http://everythingfpaulwilson.tiddlyspot.com/

I had no idea this existed. It looks as though this site has pretty much done what I wanted to do.

Has anyone been to this site? What do you think? Is the information in-depth enough? Is there a demand for a compendium?

All thoughts are welcome ...

Pat Tillman was a star football player who joined the military and was killed in action. As we learned later, he was killed by friendly fire. This documentary movie is the story of how the Tillman family was lied to about Pat's death at the hands of his own platoon: there was no enemy fire. The reason the military lied was to make a hero out of the NFL star as a recruitment tool, a propaganda campaign--that worked.

To this day, Pat Tillman is still considered a hero. His college football jersey number was retired, his NFL number is now part of the stadium, and they are still making statues of the man. That's what got the family mad. They forgot the man. They turned Pat into a myth and the man disappeared into the myth.

The Tillman mom took her case against the military, dragging four generals and the former Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, before a congressional investigational committee, to no avail. She never learned how her son died or who shot her son dead. Before Congress, the mom tells Waxman that the military took her son and turned his death into a John Wayne movie. Little did she know how true her words were: ironically, that movie would be The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance. In the movie, John Wayne kills the bad guy but James Stewart takes credit. When Stewart tries to set the record straight with the Press about the death of Vallance, the Press refuses to tell the true story, saying that the Myth has overtaken the Man, that the public would always believe the killer of the bad guy was Stewart, no matter how much the truth was yelled at them. Once the public has their hero, they don't let go.

With our soldiers abroad fighting, we needed a hero and Pat Tillman was conveniently available. We can fault the military and the government all we want, but sometimes the Myth overtakes the Man. Sadly, this was one of those occasions.

AC

P.S. Till I saw this movie today, I still believed that Tillman joined the Rangers out of a patriotic response to the 9/11 attack. I didn't realize that was part of the myth as the "real" Tillman, we learn in the film, believed the action against Iraq was "illegal" and "bullshit." Some hero, huh? Yeah, just not the one they fed us.

I enjoy the Resident Evil movie series. Just as with the SAW series, I know what to expect and get it. So, when you throw in 3-D, I not only get what I expect to get, but I get 3-D too.

First things first: Alice, the cause behind the virus that turned humanity into a bunch of zombies, turned super-human when she was infected with the virus. So, The Umbrella Company, the BAD Guys, is trying to catch Alice or find another human with similar DNA to Alice. Thus, not only are the human survivors fighting off the zombies, they are subject to the experiments of TUC.

Said experiments turn some humans into super-monsters and this also holds true for the animals that are experimented on. Alice is trying to avoid capture by TUC, fighting off zombies and super-monsters, and running into just plain old bad humans living in this chaotic environment (think Mad Max).

Well, the movie folks decided to return Alice to human form from the get-go, so super-Alice is now gone. Good. Back to basics. The movie also runs like a video game. Good. Back to the story roots. And, lastly, the 3-D is part of the movie. Good. Not a movie with 3-D added (think Last Airbender). Oh, yea, and this movie sets up the next chapter. A few questions are answered, but who the hell's keeping track?!

To summarize: Sexy Alice still kicks ass, powers or not. The super-monsters are new, or rather updates of the old. The zombies still eat humans. And TUC is still up to no good. So, if you like the series, you won't be let down. Go see it. If you don't like the series, what the hell you reading this for. :p

AC

P.S. Only a handful of people in attendance for the IMAX showing at $15 bucks a pop. Hope this low number is not indicative of opening weekend earnings as two more episodes have been green-lighted.

Hi everybody, I'm new here and I would like to start out by apologizing if this new thread is, in any way, redundant.... I did use the search functions to try and find out first if this was covered anywhere else but perhaps I am not coming up with the right search strings. At any rate, here goes....

I have read all the Repairman Jack novels up to, and including, Ground Zero, but up until this point I have borrowed all the books to read. I'd like to buy them all, but here is the problem I'm running into.

I typically buy all my books in hardcover or trade paperback. I don't like mass market paperbacks, the spines crack too easily and they hurt my hands to hold and read. So I thought, fine, I'll buy the books in hardcover.

Problem is, they're not all AVAILABLE in hardcover. Amazon has OLD editions of a couple of the early books in the series, but they do not have the same cover art and are before the writing revisions. Therefore they trigger my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I cannot have books that don't match!

Looks like I have a choice of either getting all the books in matching small paperbacks, or either having an OCD attack cause my books don't have matching art, OR having an OCD attack cause my books are in two different sizes, etc. Make that three, cause the new editions of the Adversary Cycle which have the matching cover design to the new Jack books are in TRADE paperback! acckkkk.....

Any idea if there will at any point in time be reissues of the early books in hardcover with the matching cover designs? or, just simply, HELP! What's a girl to do???

Thanks,
Gina :mad2:
