I've seen Dogtown and Z-Boys and remember it as repetitious and overblown (i.e.: the Z-Boys – who invented rad skateboarding – caused a culture shift on a par with the Beatles. As if.) But it was interesting enough to nudge me to rent the dramatized version. Lords is good coming-of-age story with nice performances (Heath Ledger’s Skip the surf guru with his buck-tooth appliance steals a ton of scenes) and a lot less bombast. There's an old saying: Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad. I've always thought it should be: Whom the gods would destroy, they grant heart's desire. Lords of Dogtown demonstrates some of that.

MINOR SPOILERS!!

I wasn't a big fan of the first movie and I'm not a big fan of the second either. I found myself laughing at many of the stunts (especially the plane crash) though some of the fight scenes were fun (the fire hose scene was really good). I like Jason Statham as an actor but these movies were just too B-material for me to enjoy. They're fun to watch but too corny to really get into. With the right directors and writers the Transporter movies could have been really successful.

IMHO, if he had hair I think he could make a good RJ.

That was a pretty good episode. I really like Eko. Keep him - get rid of Ana. But Charlie . . . uh oh.

Newbie here.

Been reading FPW for about 12 years. Great stuff.

I was perusing the forums, and people keep mentioning the revised edition of the Tomb and Nightworld. When will/are/have these been/will be/are released?

Is the revised Nightworld and Tomb going to be issued in paperback, for those of us who are not so rich?

Thansk, and If I should have done a more through search, I apologise.

Thanks,
Dan Easterday

I rented the DVD of the new documentary "Grizzly Man" by Werner Herzog last weekend - Holy smokes!

I'll try to avoid spoilers (although the fate of the subject of the documentary is pretty well known, and was the subject of a 20/20 episode using part of this documentary), but jeez, this is an amazing look at a one-of-a-kind character. Timothy Treadwell spent summers living in a grizzly bear preserve in Alaska, despite an apparent lack of knowledge of the dangers they represented, and became known as a regional legend for his school and documentary appearances on behalf of the bears. As the documentary reveals, Treadwell was going rapidly insane out there, and as he recorded hours and hours of himself talking to the camera, he became increasingly paranoid and bizarre. Treadwell himself wasn't your normal bearded woodland recluse - his flamboyant manner and style of speaking was closer to Carson Kressley of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" than Grizzly Adams, and his taped outbursts are counterpointed by the very Teutonicly grim voice-overs by Herzog, who knows a thing or two about people going insane in the wilderness. An amazing character study.

Fascinating film, and a sort of real-life horror story.

It was just released on DVD. Has anyone else seen this?

Once again I discover a short-lived slice of brilliance thanks to DVD. It stars Seth Green, Eugene Levy and a handful of hilarious puppets. They all act together in the Levy-directed kids show: Sweetknuckle Junction. Much adult-flavored humor ensues. The entire series is available in one package.

I finally got to watch this fascinating, gorgeous and touching documentary last night. I couldn't help but be awed by the penguins as they endure immense hardships for the sake of their family. Morgan Freeman has the perfect voice for the narration.

I do recommend watching the creature-cam special feature; it provides a previously unseen glimpse into the Emporors' hunting methods that is spectacular.

Much as I like chop-socky films and Jet Li, I didn't like this. Don't know exactly why. Maybe the underlying setup -- treating a man like an animal and training him to be an attack dog -- is too grim for me. The 3-act structure is too formulaic and predictable. Some of the fight scenes -- especially the one with the guy in the white gi -- went on far too long.
