I was surprised that Arrow in the Head (an offshoot of JoBlo.com, the [in]famous movie website, the Arrow is all about horror movies) hadn't mentioned anything about Dead in the Water yet, so sent them a scoop. Two days later, this was posted.

And I was thanked on the page! Happy-happy-joy-joy...

If I didn't know any better, I'd say this movie was the origin of Ant-Man (Henry Pym); but it isn't. Still, it is a great story. I'd just finished doing some research on ants and saw this movie a few days later. It helped to understand some of the jokes; the nod to the movie "Them" did not go unnoticed either.

A few spoilers/favorite scenes:

1) The wasp invasion against the ant colony.

2) The frog attack (from an ant's point of view, this is real monster stuff).

3) The final battle between the wasp/ant alliance and the Exterminator (voiced by Paul Giamatti).

Kids and adults will love this flick. Both were laughing in equal doses at the viewing I saw last night. This is a dvd keeper.

AC

P.S. Don't let the poor ticket sales fool you--this movie is better than most of the current/recent animation fare; liked it even more than "Chicken Little," which I liked alot!

Today I saw "Hard Candy".

Hayley's a smart, charming teenage girl. She's hooking up in a coffee shop with Jeff, a guy she's met on the Internet. And even though he's a cute, smooth high-end fashion photographer in his early 30s, Hayley shouldn't be suggesting that the two of them go back to his house, alone. When they get there, Hayley quickly finds some vodka and starts mixing screwdrivers. She even suggests a photo shoot and strips off some clothing. Everything is going well for Jeff, until his vision blurs and fades, and he passes out.

It turns out Hayley has spiked Jeff's screwdriver, and when he revives, he's tied down with Hayley searching through his place. She doesn't think it'll take too long to get a confession that she's not the first teenage girl Jeff's brought home and, more importantly, that her prisoner knows what happened to Donna Mauer, another girl who disappeared from Jeff's favorite coffee shop. And if he's unwilling to confess, she has another plan
......Okay, I should stop spoiler in here.

This movie, "Hard Candy" was very disgusting and horrible and disturbed me! That's a nightmare for all men! I'm sure everybody saw King's "Misery". Annie Wilks was a horrible character. Hayley is teen girl version Annie Wilks!

I have a paperback copy of Nightworld that was passed on to me a few years ago by Mike Hanson. I have the Borderlands edition now so I am passing this one on again. I'll throw it in a priority mail envelope. I am only asking for the shipping price--$4.05 by check or money order or $5.00 if you pay by PayPal (to cover their fees). If you are interested, please PM me. First come, first serve.

It's offical, I'm in love.
Take a look at me avatar.
His name is David Tennant. Currently played Doctor number 10 on the hit BBC series 'Doctor Who', which unfortunetly does not come to the US until sometime around October. I've done the unthinkable and watched some of David's Doctor Who episodes on Youtube.com. I've become something of a spoiler junkie in regards to that.
Anyways, David is....well....gorgeous! But besides that he has an air of the everyman about him. He is so...normal, and I think the actor who plays Jack needs that air about him.
One think I don't want is a well known name to play him, I think that would be a huge mistake.
And I just adore David. And I adore Jack. What could be more perfect?

Mr. Wilson, if you read this, please, please, please, don't let Hollywood to do Jack what they did to another favorite character of mine, one Robert Langdon. Much as I love Tom Hanks, all I saw in the movie was TOM HANKS...not Rober Langdon.
As the creator of such a wonderful character as Jack, I believe you need to put your foot down in regards to who plays him. You said in the recent past that we the reader would not like the choice that was made. That phrase gives me a bad, bad, feeling. If we don't like the actor, just what makes you think we'd like the movie?
To connect to Jack on screen the way we have to him in the books, he needs to be played by someone we can indenify with. We someone real.
To me, David Tennant is as real as they come.
Please, give him a look. All Jack fans,...not to mention all Doctor Who fans...will be pleased.

I've seen a bunch of movies in the last few days. It's been enjoyable, though I haven't gone over the moon for any one film.

Little Miss Sunshine
I really liked this movie. I clapped and cheered at the end. The Little Miss Sunshine beauty contest was hysterical and little Olive was a standout participant. The movie examines strained, twisted family relations, and through exaggeration illuminates the mistakes we can make so easily with those we love most. Alan Arkin is great. I wish he'd make more movies. He's one of my all time favorite actors. Everyone in the cast was terrific. I heartily recommend "Little Miss Sunshine."

Scoop
Eh. If you're a fan of Woody Allen, you can wait for the DVD on this one. It's a pale reflection of the former comedic glories of Woody Allen. He, himself, was sort of fun to watch, as was Scarlett Johannson. Neither achieves greatness here. The dialogue was stilted. The film didn't hang together well. However, Hugh Jackson in a near Speedo is certainly worth seeing. The boy can swim! For the guys, Scarlett in her bathing suit is an eyeful.

World Trade Center
I was leery of seeing "World Trade Center." Living seven miles north of the WTC, I could see and smell the smoke for days after the attack. I loved shopping in the mall at the WTC, which is where the men in the movie are trapped and buried. I knew people who died there. The event changed my life, which sounds sappy and obvious, but I'm not the person I was before 9/11. That's all I'll say.

With that in mind, I found the first 20 minutes of the film to be the toughest. Brought back to that beautiful September morning, knowing what was coming, seeing the shadow of the first plane nearing its awful destination, watching the brave men and women who serve and protect my city rush unknowingly to their doom, was heartbreaking. It was moving in the extreme to see the danger that others put themselves in to attempt rescues, and how much help flooded to the tip of Manhattan that day.

With every wheezy breath inhaled by the men trying to dig out the two main characters, I kept thinking of the deaths and continuing illness suffered by the hundreds of rescue workers who breathed that toxic air for all those weeks and months of rescue and clean up work. Five years later, our bravest and finest are still suffering and dying.

I am glad I saw “World Trade Center.” Is it a great movie? Probably not. Is it a good movie, yes, for sure, and worth seeing. The special effects are well done, seamless, in fact. I suspect Nicholas Gage will be nominated for an Oscar, but I don’t think he’ll take it home.

The Devil Wears Prada
I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would. I saw it close on the heels of “World Trade Center,” and of these two very New York movies, I’d have to say I liked “Prada” more, which was a surprise to me. Meryl Streep is wonderful. I surely hope she’ll be nominated for an Oscar. Certainly, because of the way the Golden Globes are set up, she’ll be nominated for best actress in a comedy, and she’ll probably win. Well done, Meryl! The fashions were fabulous, naturally. It’s too bad Gia isn’t a brown eyed, brunette, because Anne Hathaway would make a lovely Gia. No matter how much the movie characters justify the exotic and excessive world of fashion, spending that much time and money on such a deeply superficial enterprise is nuts and borderline sinful. But it was fun to watch. Those folks live and breathe the most rarefied air in New York. I’d probably choke on it.

And now for trailers...
Well, I really only want to address one, "Infamous." OMG, it's a remake of "Capote," and "Capote" was made just 2 years ago! WTF? For one, "Capote" does not need to be remade. Secondly, what were they thinking? It's the exact same story, nearly identical scene for scene, though it looks as though "Infamous" has a greater emphasis on Capote's New York social scene. The actor who plays Capote looks more like him than Phillip Seymour Hoffman, but no way can he touch PSH's performace. I just don't understand why this movie was made.

I know you have an affinity for the blues so you might want to check out the Crossroads Guitar Festival, a DVD loaded with stellar bluesmen. I watched the first disc last night and it is full of mind-bending guitar work. Scroll down on the link to see the line up.

I was really surprised by Vince Gill's playing, never realized what an axeman he is.

Please put 1982's 'Pieces' in your queue. I haven't seen this since it was in the theater when I was 5. Yes, my parents took me to totally inappropriate movies. If enough of us request this movie maybe Netflix will buy it.
