After class last Saturday, I went to buy a coffee at the snack machine area. Someone had left four boxes of books: texts, fiction, nonfiction, HB, PB. I rifled through the boxes and found a paperback called Healer by F. Paul Wilson, a sci-fi novel from 1976. I read it in one sitting. Now it's ripe for ebay. Putting it up for 99cents.

AC

P.S. Unless someone wants to read it. Then I'll trade. Need Sims and Midnight Mass. Or whacha got? PM me. I'll wait till Wednesday to ebay it.

The movie Kick-Ass has some problems with the soundtrack. You see, while there is much mutilation, stabbings, shootings, being burnt alive, all in close-up with great special effects, the soundtrack plays kiddie music, as though it's all a lark. And the story is quite entertaining...until the background music distracts you. I really liked the graphic novel. But the movie falls short of being what the comic book promised. If you like the Banana Splits music while watching an eleven year old girl murder several men (the woman she kills takes place off screen), then this is the movie for you. Take ear plugs.

AC

P.S. I grade it a B+, for its exessive gore and violence. Maybe the dvd version will have the Tangerine Dream soundtrack.

according to the secret history of the world, "the touch" takes place after "reborn"....so, naturally, i was going to read "reborn" first....but then i read somewhere that "reborn" HAS to be read AFTER "the touch". is this true?

just finished black wind. i loved it, even though for some reason i didn't think i would. anyway, there was one connection between that novel and by the sword that seemed a little shaky.
SPOILER

in black wind, the shoten (i think that's what they are called) has to be a child, but it can be an adult in by the sword. now i don't have access to a copy of by the sword, and this is driving me crazy. does this ever get explained, and i just don't remember?

I found out this trailer in Apple Movie Trailers.

http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/indep...uerstokyo/

Working backwards through history, Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo explores the mystery of the development of Japan’s love affair with bugs. Using insects like an anthropologist’s toolkit, the film uncovers Japanese philosophies that will shift Westerners’ perspectives on nature, beauty, life, and even the seemingly mundane realities of their day-to-day routines.

Seems this documentary film is about some Japanese people who loves bugs. Someone say "I bought this Ferrari with money I made selling beetles." And someone say "The Japanese have always kept singing insects as pets."

Sounds like this documentary is weird things from a point of view of American and other countries people.

So, I want to ask to "you". Does Americans or Brits never own insects as a pet?

Or is this a Japanese only?

Anyway, this is very interesting topic.

So I watched The Box in two parts(fell asleep to it the other night)and it was alright. It scores points for originality and a cool premise but it never got enough momentum going to move me toward the edge of my seat. Cameron Diaz, James Marsden and Frank Langella do solid work but their characters were a bit flat. All in all, I'd say rent it if you don't feel there is a better alternative.

It is directed by Richard Kelly(I didn't recognize his fingerprints until after my viewing)who is a bit of cult favorite with his Donnie Darko and Southland Tales films(both of which I intensely disliked), so if you enjoyed those you might like this-although this one makes a helluva lot more sense than either of those.

After recently reading "Aftershock and Others" and rereading "Lipidleggin'" I started to wonder what everyones favorite short story by our favorite writer is.

A couple of mine are "Foet" and "Lipidleggin" because of the social commentary angle that they have. Really fitting for a lot of things today.

I also have become a big fan of "Itsy bitsy spider". I have an aversion to spiders and this story gave me a nightmare the night I read it. Alright, I was up way too late and had other stuff stressing me out at the time but I had a nightmare that one of the big old nastys was looking at me through my bedroom window.

I also really like "Demonsong" but maybe not for reasons that would seem obvious. I like it because it, to me shows a writing style so unlike the F. Paul Wilson that we read now. I like to think that we are seeing the evolution of FPW but I am sure it was more intentional on FPWs part than that.

Others?

Took the kids to see this last week and really enjoyed myself.

There was one scene that was just a little too intense for Gracie but other than that she really really enjoyed it and is now obsessed with Vikings and Dragons.

The only thing that I could say negative about it, and it is super minor is why do the Vikings have Scottish accents? (Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson voice two of the main characters).
