I really enjoyed this film. Having never read the HELLBLAZER comics I was able to enjoy this film without the pretense that one oft encounters when approaching a movie based on a beloved work.

I was able to see this film for what it was: Pure bubble gum, but God it was enjoyable. It had the tendancy to drag on at parts but just when it was getting tiresome there would be some witty dialouge or a classic Keanu facial expression (he has 2) to bring a smile to my face.

Overall I left this film with a happy feeling and wouldn't mind seeing a sequel.

This review may be flawed because the last three movies I watched were White Noise, Boogeyman, and Catwoman. Compared to the infecta-trifecta this film was a rare treat.

It also didn't hurt that there was a preview for BATMAN BEGINS at the begining. Overall it was good to see DC comics bring a dark feel to the screen. Kind of gives me hope that there may be a decent Superhero franchise from DC on the way.

In Closing: Constantine won't win any awards and it wasn't the most spectacular film to hit the screen in a long time, but with it's tounge in cheek take on the horror/action genre this is one wicked ride.

Scott Miller Wrote:...speaking of Giammati, has anyone seen Sideways? Not the type of movie I generally rush to see on the bigscreen, but I am a fan of Alexander Payne.

I just saw "Sideways," and I enjoyed it very much. Paul Giammati is terrific. I know at least 3 guys who are just like him.

"Sideways" also has the single funniest scene I've seen in a very long time. That particular scene is so hysterical I couldn't stop laughing. Since arriving home, I keep having flash backs and laughing all the more.

I'd like to see "Sideways" get the Oscar for best adapted screenplay. I don't think it's going to get anything else - not best supporting actor, not best director, not best movie. It's a funny and moving script that Giammati brought to life beautifully.

Aphew and I are currently updating the FAQ. We are currently looking at changing the current format (i.e. separate web pages for each question) by making the FAQ self contained as one file. The question is, though, what format would you prefer?

Also, take a look at the current FAQ and let us know of any new questions you'd like to see listed.

In Connecticut...

Frustrated with lengthy advertisements and previews that delay movies and chew up viewing time, a state lawmaker wants theaters to be honest about when a movie actually starts.

Rep. Andrew Fleischmann is proposing legislation to force movie listings to print the time the previews start, and when the movies start.

"We're being manipulated right now. We're being robbed of our freedom of choice because we're not told when the actual movie will begin," said Fleischmann, D-West Hartford.

Here's a state with lots of unemployment and 185 miles of coastline that offers hundreds of potential entry points for terrorists. Instead of worrying about the life and liberty of Connecticut citizens, or bringing in new industry, this jerk is writing law to regulate the way movie theaters list their schedules.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!

Mary and I will often go to the movies and see different films. Yesterday I wanted to see Constantine and she wanted to see Sideways. We compromised on The Aviator (which promised to be more a big-screen film than Sideways).

I wasn’t expecting to hate it, but I sure as hell didn’t expect to be blown away.

It’s a somewhat (okay, more than somewhat) sanitized version of roughly the first half of Howard Hughes’s life. I’m amazed at what he accomplished in those 42 years. The film also shows his growing paranoia and the obsessive-compulsive tendencies that would turn him into a mad recluse toward the end of his life.

I’m also amazed at the performances. If DiCaprio wins an Oscar for it, he well deserves it. (Pace, Maggers – I haven’t seen Ray yet.)

But what adds to the film are the supporting star turns by the two Kates: Blanchett and Beckinsale. Blanchett’s portrayal of another Kate – Hepburn – is so dead on it’s scary. As if she were channeling Hepburn. I’ve always considered Kate Beckinsale just another pretty face, but she does a wonderful job as Ava Gardner.

I’ve rarely seen a movie I didn’t consider too long and this was no exception. A good 15 minutes could have been easily cut – especially from Hughes’s prolonged breakdown as Pan Am and Senator Brewster (great smarmy portrayal by Alan Alda) were conspiring to put him out of business.

But Hughes gets his act together and you want to cheer at his in-your-face testimony during Brewster’s trumped-up hearings.

Worth seeing.

But toward the end of the film I was greatly saddened because it’s ultimately tragic. Here was an innovator, a dreamer, a driving force in films and aviation, brought down by his neurotransmitters. By the time he died in 1976 – attended by Mormons, the only people he would hire because their blood was “untainted” – he was unrecognizable. Had to be fingerprinted to be identified. If we’d had SSRIs like Prozac and Paxil available back in the 1940s, the second half of his life might have been completely different.

What happened to Christian Bale?!

Today I went to see The Machinist. What a weird movie! Creepy! It's reminded me of The Thinner. According to Guiness world record, England's lady has 19 days sleepless record, but 365 days is......Nah! Impossible!

Anyway, Christian Bale is awesome. That...his body....I don't know what I say. I read some articles about his interview. 140 pounds...130 pounds, and finally 120 pounds. Not used CG. Even Robert DeNiro can't do like him.

Has anyone seen this movie?

From late 70's to late 80's, one monthly magazine published in Japan.
The magazine's name was SF宝石(SF Hoseki). Hoseki's meaning is Jewel. Well, anyway, today I went to used books store, and I found out the April.1980 issue of SF Hoseki.

This magazine, a lot of great author's short stories contained. Paul Anderson, Isaac Asimov...etc,

And....our F.Paul Wilson! Smile

At last I can read one of his short stories. The title is...

To Fill The Sea And Air

Cover of SF Hoseki April.1980

And...this is inner illustration of To Fill The Sea And Air. Japanese title is "Fair Play".

I just saw "Being Julia." Annette Bening is the movie, and she carries it beautifully. She's nominated for Best Actress, and for my money, she deserves to win.

Annette Bening
Hilary Swank
Catalina Sandino Moreno
Kate Winslet
Imelda Staunton

I haven't seen Imelda Staunton's performance in "Vera Drake." Catalina Sandino Moreno is good but not Oscar worthy. Kate Winslet was terrific in "Eternal Sunshine," but can't compare. And while Hilary Swank was superb in "Million Dollar Baby," she shares the movie nearly equally with Clint Eastwood, and to a lesser degree, Morgan Freeman.

The trouble is, probably all of 3 people have seen "Being Julia." It's not the sort of movie to make a lot of money. It takes place in 1938 London. Bening plays a middle aged theater star coming to grips, in the most wonderful way, with her advancing age. She positively glows in her myriad closeups, unafraid to show the few wrinkles that she has. Unlike her husband whose handsome good looks have been savaged by plastic surgery, Bening seems not to care or to want to save her lovely face. She has no need. She is growing older with grace and dignity.

There is barely a scene without Bening in "Being Julia." It's a masterful performance, nuanced and funny and she plays her character with great wit.

Well, I don't know if Bening will win. It seems the odds are on Swank. But I'd love it if she did.
