A Billy Bob Thornton movie. It was a bit odd. The acting was great. Seemed like every actor nailed their part but the story was lame. It had its moments, though. A shame to see such good acting go to waste. Hell, even the dog's scenes were good, if not a bit eerie. The acting is worth the rental but the direction and story...

Paul needs some help. Blake came up with one (Resolutions).

What have you got?

Speculating based on a couple of posts I'm thinking terrorism may play a part in RJ10, so my offering is Infidel.

Could get people talking, and if you're really lucky a fatwah put on your head, Paul. Wink

Hey FPW i had a general question for you. Are you planning any kind of novel with Glaeken and past events with Rasalom? I know alot of the things that happened in Nightworld happened previously with Glaeken and i always wondered about what exactly happened.

...at least as of this writing.

The Repairman Jack story has been hanging in the Amazon Shorts top five since launch. Finally hit #1 last night.

The list is updated hourly, and I don't know how long it will stay there (by the time you check it out it may have slipped), but this is the first time I've seen it in the top spot.

Glad I only spent 49 cents, August 29, 2005
Reviewer: Terry Will (Albuquerque) - See all my reviews
I have been wanting to try a Repairman Jack book, but I'm glad I only spent 49 cents to find out how formulaic and pointless the writing is. How many stereotypes can be lined up in a row? Of course the bad guys are black, and naturally one was the other's prison punk. The tough by-the-book cop makes this one exception... I mean, come on.

I don't know how much F Paul Wilson got paid for this story, but he should have used some of it to pay for an editor. On Page 3 he's wearing "steel toed work boots" but by Page 4 his "sneakers" are "whispering along the sidewalk." Same page, "...he was spun to his left and to hand face down on the hood..." Huh? It's a short story, how long does it take to copyedit this?

If this short story was supposed to whet my appetite for the books, I have a bad taste in my mouth instead.

I'm too lazy to search, but awhile back James Woods was mentioned in the John Carpenter thread and as luck would have it, I just purchased two of my favorite films of his: Another Day in Paradise and Bestseller. ADIP is the story of an aging criminal couple, Woods and Melanie Giffith, who take a young couple, Vincent Kartheiser and Natasha Gregson Wagner, under their wings to show them the ropes. Bestseller is the tale of a hitman, Woods, who applies pressure to cop/author Brian Dennehy to write his biography. Anyone who likes Woods who hasn't seen either should do themselves a favor and rent them.

Other memorable Woods performances: Salvador, This Girl's Life, Dirty Pictures, Diggstown, Citizen Cohn, The Hard Way, True Believer, Videodrome, The Onion Field, and as the voice of Hades in Hercules.

Christian Bale also was discussed due to his complete ownership of the Batman role so I thought I would mention a couple of other worthwhile performances: Shaft, American Psycho, Equilibrium, Velvet Goldmine, & Metroland.

I rented a movie called "Irreversible" the other day. It is a French movie (didn't use the word film because it is shot apparently on DV). This is quite possibly one of the most disturbing films I have seen in quite some time. If you do not mind subtitles andif you want to have a sleepless night, I reccommend this movie. It is not a horror film, but some of the scenes are quite horrifying. The film plays out from the end to the begining, much in the way Christopher Nolans "Memento" does.

Irreversible stars the lovely Monica Bellucci as Alex, a victim of a violent crime that leads to her death. Her boyfriend with the help of her best friend, team up with two thugs in an attempt to track down and kill the man responsible for Alex's death.

The movie is not for the squemish, as it is very vulgar, violent, and unsettling. If you are the type of film viewer that is perfectly okay with watching a mans face get smashed repeatedly with the bottom ridge of a fire extinguisher than this movie is definitely up your alley.

The movie is available from both Netflix and Blockbuster Video online.

I have been watching more Japanese movies. Here is the latest one.

I just saw the movie Rasen (Spiral) this past week. Rasen is the original sequel to Ringu.

This movie follows the book pretty well. Everyone said it was horrible, but I actually kind of enjoyed it. The Ringu series of books takes the Ring in a completely different direction than the movies do. Rasen is much more of a medical thriller/paranormal events movie than an actual “horror” movie.

If you like Ringu, and if you are interested in how the author originally meant for the direction to go, I recommend seeing this movie.

Rumor has it that the audiences didn't appreciate a drama filled non-horror sequel to Ringu, so they made Ringu 2.

Ok I got to watch part 1 of the new series last night.

Overall it was fairly good. They are really playing up the sex for political gain aspect. Don't know how historically accurate that is but it made for some nice eye candy.
The religious sacrifice was also interesting and I am going to assume that is an accurate portrayal of how it was done.
The opening fight scene I thought was very realistic. To early to tell how good the series will be but after watching the fist one I will continue to keep an eye open for it.

Amazing to realize how you had to watch your back when fighting for the Glory of Rome.

Guess the only part I sort of scoffed at was the language used at some points, where they basically just revert back to english slang.

Still gets a thumbs up so far.

***SPOILER ALERT***

I finally saw this movie the other night. I thought it was really good. I knew the (very) general story concept but was pleasantly surprised that it involved quite a bit more. I has assumed that the movie would end with the escape and that would be it.

This movie had a really good feel to it. The effects are surprisingly good for the time, and the acting was very good. I recommend this to any Sci-Fi fans who may have let this slip by.

BTW, when did the MPAA rating change THAT much? This movie is rated PG, yet contains full nudity which would today be at least R.
