I am not sure why, after six years, F. Paul Wilson is once again up to his shenanigans with these horrid plants!

We thought he was a smart man, but this carelessness and general disregard for mankind puts him dead center in "Enemy to Humanity" bulls-eye!

Now, it appears that he has tossed the body of one of his plants into the reservoir! Why not burn it Mr. Wilson? Why not turn it into compost? Do you have any idea what you have done? This is the start of the end! We ALWAYS assumed the end would come from New Jersey, just not like this. We assumed it was coming in the form of Chris Christie winning the Republican party nomination.

We don't understand why anyone would want to keep these plants as "pets". They are hideous, vile, and disgusting. They make the most annoying sounds. They are the pug of the plant world.

We warn you, find your plants and destroy them...burn them!

WED – 2/24

*The crazy temperature swings in the NE have confused my triffids. Usually dormant in Feb, they're presently moving about and...agitated.

*Really high winds tonight, but the triffids seem to be relishing it...milling about. Not to worry -- they're penned.


THUR – 2/25

*Raining again. The triffids are loving the moisture. Getting awful big, and there seems to be more of them. The pen's getting crowded.

*Strange...usually the gentle clicking of the triffids is like white noise...lulling. Tonight it's really loud, and setting me on edge


FRI – 2/26

*Hmmm...a part of the fence on the triffids' pen was blown down last night. I hope none got out. Damn, I wish I'd counted them recently.

*Checked the woods and found a trail of turned-up leaves. No deer did that. Have to face it: One of the triffids got out. Maybe more. Crap.

*Still no sign of the missing triffid (triffids?). Can't report it...illegal here to raise them in NJ. Worried...this is just like 2009.

*Keeping News12NJ on for reports of triffid sightings. None so far. Maybe I dodged a bullet and none escaped.


SAT – 2/27

*Triffid pen okay this AM. No reports of sightings. Shaken by the triffid kill (dead rabbit) on my front porch. An offering? Or a warning?

*Found a decomposing deer in the woods about 250 ft from the house. Signs of multiple triffid feedings. Crap. This means big trouble. CRAP!

*Time for a triffid hunt. Got my Benelli Super Black Eagle II autoloading 12-gauge packed with 3.5-inch double-0 magnums. Wish me luck.

*Of course, a flamethrower would be better, but I'm holding that in reserve. Don't want to set the woods ablaze...yet.

*Came up empty on the hunt. Damn triffids are eluding me. News-12-NJ has no reports of sightings. This is still manageable.


SUN – 2/28

*Yesterday I waited with the Benelli near the dead deer, figuring the triffids would come back to feed. They didn't. Today I go after them.

*Spent the whole damn day hunting the escaped triffids - not a sign of them. Like they're avoiding me. But triffids can't think. Right?

*Can’t sleep due to the noise from the remaining triffids in the pen. They’re clicking like demented castanets. What the hell is going on?


MON – 2/29

*Awakened by silence this AM. No triffid clicking. Looked out and they're gone - ALL of them. Somehow they opened the pen's gate.

*Roamed the woods with the Benelli all day but no sign of triffids. I'm a little worried. More than a little. What's going on?

*Checked the yard and found the flower beds torn up. Vandalized by triffids? Is that possible? This is getting creepy now.

*Quiet tonight without the triffids. The pen is empty. Where could they have gone? Not the state park, I hope. If so, I'm screwed.


TUE – 3/1

*The yard is completely torn up – triffid tracks all over. A big hole in the chainlink fence by the reservoir. They’ve broken into the state park.

*Gonna be even harder to find them now. And…wait…3 shapes moving away thru the reservoir water. OMG! TRIFFIDS CAN SWIM!

*I wish triffids would attack each other, but what's the point? They're carnivores. Be like offering broccoli to Venus flytraps

*Yikes! Came home tonight and ran over a triffid in my driveway. Stepped out in front of me. I dumped its crushed remains in the reservoir.

Besides me, how many out there have actually seen Triffids?

I guess not many, because that Day was in the 60's and most were blind.

Did you choose the name deliberately for Aryans and Absinthe, at that time in the 1920s in Germany, and was Ernst meant to be related to Anton Drexler, one of the founders of the Nazi party? It just seems such a coincidence.

Can anyone tell me when year zero is roughly supposed to be?
I'm currently reading the Secret History in chronological order and recently finished Reborn. It just keeps getting better!

I know one of the RJ novels involves 9/11 so I assume year zero is a few years after that.
Also, since the RJ novels are set over the course of 3-4 years I know they were not all set the year they were written.

So just wondering when year zero is. Mid 2000s, late 2000s?

Sorry if this has been asked but I couldn't find a timeline on the forum.

So where does one turn if they've read every Repairman Jack novel and they want more stuff along that vein?


That is a very, very hard question to answer. There are a lot of detective procedural novels out there but there are very few that compare favorably with RJ (and even fewer authors who compare favorably with FPW).


I tried reading Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden novels but I hated them. For those who aren't familiar, Harry Dresden is a PI working in Chicago who is secretly a wizard. Except that it's not so secret since he actually puts "Wizard" on his business card and phone book listing! And this despite the fact that there is this "White Council" which is constantly thundering at Harry that he mustn't let the mundane world know that magic is real -- on pain of death, no less.


So here's someone who hangs out a *public* shingle as a wizard but who can't do any *public* magic or he'll be killed. Does that make *any* sense?


And he wonders why no one will hire him as a PI?


God, I hate characters that are stupid! If he just dropped the stupid -- and essentially illegal, considering the White Council's stance -- "Wizard" title from his business card, all his problems would be solved. By secretly using his magic to solve mundane cases he would become the most sought-after -- and wealthiest -- PI in Chicago.


Ok, so the author doesn't want him to be a rich, successful PI. He's going for the hardboiled PI thing. Fine. It's a cliche but whatever.


There are so many better ways of accomplishing that without making your main character a dumbass -- make him broke because of his pride by having him only take the cases that interest him -- he'd rather have an empty bank account than work on a divorce case. That's so much better than Dresden just sitting at home hoping the phone will ring and wondering why he doesn't have any clients.


I also hated the supporting characters, especially Karrin Murphy, his supposed best friend. Murphy is this female Chicago cop who is supposed to be tough as nails. The writer "proves" this by having Murphy punch Dresden whenever he says something she doesn't like -- and I'm not talking about a playful punch that makes a point, I'm talking about punches that knock you down and leave bruises. Uhm… someone should tell the author that a person who does that is not a "strong female character" a person who does that is basically just an asshole.


Ok, so the Harry Dresden novels didn't work out, what else is out there. Someone recommended the Sandman Slim novels so I gave the first one a try.


Oh… my… GOD!!!


This was even worse than Dresden!


I just can't enjoy a book if I have no respect for the main character and that's how I felt about Sandman Slim. The guy is an idiot -- even worse than Dresden, which is saying something.


He never thinks anything through or plans anything. Consequently he's always bringing a knife to a gunfight, a gun to a magical duel, and a magic weapon against a being invulnerable to magic. He confronts the guy who he knows wants to shoot him on sight... and gets shot, he infiltrates the lair of people he knows are magicians, but has prepared NO defenses against magic, nor brought any weapons that overcome their defenses. The only thing he's really good at is acting like a human punching bag. The longer it went on the less I cared about what happened to him.

So where do I turn? Is there anything else out there that's any good?

It has been a while since my last post but i'm up to speed on all of FP's latest. However, I still have my breath held on a Healer audiobook. Unequivocally my favourite sci fi story of this life and have read it countless times but would love to hear it told by the voice talent FP subscribes to. Any news of it coming to fruition any time soon?

A few decades passed after I saw "The Keep" on TV. As you know, this "worst" film is not making to DVD.
But miraculously (did I say "miraculously"?).........finally I'll see this film again, on Japanese cable channel; "The Cinema".
