I've been meaning to check out one of these operas on the movie screen for some time now. I finally got around to it. And I picked a doozy. I can't tell if it were good or bad; I just know I enjoyed the evening and will be attending more operas in the future. I mean, for the price of a movie, you can enjoy an opera on a good sound system on an IMAX screen. And you don't even have to wear the black tie and tails.

AC

P.S. This opera was only a few hours long, so that may have had to do with my enjoyment. The real test will come when I attend the 3 to 4 hour shows. Yikes.

This is basically I Love You, Man Part Two. The "dinner" takes up only a fraction of the movie. Steve Carell shines as the neurotic IRS agent who's clueless when it comes to real life (which is kinda the point of the movie--that fantasy is better than real life). Anyway... if you want a few chuckles, you might want to catch this movie on a double-feature with any other comedy out right now. Otherwise, wait for the rental.

AC

P.S. Based on Carell's performance in this flick, I think he'd be a great choice for a Being There remake. No disrespect to Pete Sellers. I really think Carell could pull it off with the right director. Hmmmm....

Current gem of the art house circuit and winner of the Sundance Film Festival, Winter's Bone tells the bleak story of a seventeen year old whose father jumps bail after putting up the family home as collateral. With the bonds people ready to take their house, the young girl sets out to find her father against the backdrop of a small Missouri (pronounced Misery by one moviegoer) community. That such a place can exist challenges credulity, but there it is, bold as brass. Loved the dark look of the movie and the documentary feel to it, but at heart, it's a noir detective story told in the backwoods where drugrunners have their own code of family and honor (kinda like in the old moonshining days, except now it's crystal meth instead of hooch). Grisly finale. Definitely adding this to my dvd collection. See it on the big screen Worth a watch.

This link should take you to the first installment of The Keep. It's in ten minute segments, and I haven't gone through them all yet, but it appears to be all there.

I watched Pirate Radio last night and was solidly entertained. It tells the tale of group of DJs who anchored off Britian's coast to broadcast rock-n-roll because it was illegal to do so on land. I'm not sure how much artistic liberty they took but it's pretty wild to think such a situation could even occur. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rhys Ifans(who I wouldn't mind seeing as RJ) and Bill Nighy are the standouts from a solid ensemble. Damn good soundtrack and great use of The Who's "My Generation." I would think that any classic rock fan would enjoy the movie.

I've been puzzling over if there are two or three versions of "The Tomb." I have the Tor 2006 edition that contains the version of the story first released by the Borderlands Press in 2004. The author's FAQ says he revised the text in 1998. The puzzle is that the Amazon Look Inside for the Tor 2008 edition has a 1984 copyright date and the text that's visible is very much set in 1984 with VCRs, phone booths, "answerphones," etc. Does this book contain the 1998 revised text or did that show up somewhere else?

How many do we have now? If I recall...

The Lilitongue of Gefreda
The cleaning machine
Jacob Prather's Mystery Machine (Oz's Device)
The mini Tesla tower in Conspiracies

That leaves 3 more. Or did I miss one?

Salt--Bourne Identity remixed. Not a criticism. Liked it alot. All action. Get a large tup of popcorn for this one.

Charlie St. Cloud--Not advertised as a Christian movie, but I think it is. Again, not a criticism. Loved this flick. Teenager Charlie and his little brother Sam love sailing; Charlie's off to Stanford, Sam wants to be a pitcher for the Red Sox. Charlie promises to practice pitching and catching with Sam until he's off for school on a sailing scholarship. Bam. Accident. Sam is killed. Good old Ray Liotta as a paramedic brings Charlie back to life. But Charlie's promise to Sam must be kept. Yep, he pitches and catches with Sam's ghost. Charlie skips Stanford to work as a groundskeeper for the cemetery where Sam is buried. Charlie is locked in a time loop, meeting Sam daily to practice. Alas, Charlie falls in love and must decide between Sam and his new love. This summary does not give the story justice as there are some shocking twists and turns and a great ending that sums up the whole story conflict quite well. See this if you can in the theater. Great story. Great acting. Great editing and soundtack.

Life During Wartime--I think my jaw dropped open at the beginning of the movie and I didn't close it till the end. No, wait. I remember eating popcorn. Dizzying storyline. Imagine Terry Crowes meets John Waters on acid. Wait, wait. How about David Lynch meets the Coen Brothers. Well, this flick is somewhere in there. Great performance by Paul Reubens. Strange, strange movie. Right up my alley.
