Hi - I'm new here. But I've recently read all of the Jack material I could get my hands on (including Crisscross, Freakshow and Barrens) and have read the first 4 adversary books. I have Reprisal and Nightworld, but should I read them? If they will be re-written with Jack playing a much more important role (which is certainly implied by a little old lady with a dog in a retirement community in Florida) maybe I should wait. Love to hear the advise as part of me wants to dive into the books ASAP!!

Hello all,

I've recently seen this poster on many bus stops in my area, and I think it looks VERY RJ.

He may not be able to act, be he sure looks like Mr. Jack, especially in that poster.

New to the board, so pardon if this has been discussed previously.
I remember that one or two of the vampire anthologies I own has this story.
One of them was based on the theme of vampires ruling the world. Anyhow, my questions are:
1. Anybody know the names of the anthologies this story was reprinted in?
2. Is the version in said anthologies unabridged and complete?
3. Does the short story chronologically lead into the novel or is the novel an evolution of the original story?
4. Has FPW got any other vampire short stories out there somewhere?

And for the record, I thought the movie version of "The Keep" was okay (at least as a high school senior watching it first run in the theater).

My library actually has the "Midnight Mass" novel even though it has skipped the RJ books after "Conspiracies". They put it "on hold" for me today.

Thanks,
EG
(Who's hoping to make it up the road from Virginia to Horrorfind in Aug.)

Love Object is a nice little demented piece of work.

If you must watch a WWII horror movie prior to the DVD release of The Keep, be sure to take Deathwatch over The Bunker as it is far superior.

"The Man with the Screaming Brain"
STATUS: Due in 2005 on the Sci-Fi Channel
We don’t know much about this upcoming Sci-Fi-Channel movie beyond that the writer, director and star is Bruce Campbell (“The Evil Dead,” “Bubba Ho-Tep”), and that means this meal will be especially tasty for those who like extra cheese. Campbell plays a wealthy businessman out for revenge after a mad scientist replaces part of his brain with that of a Russian spy. It’s a story ripped from today’s headlines!

Just started reading Virgin yesterday. Oh....and I finished it yesterday as well. It's strange. I could not put it down. It certainly wasn't the most suspenseful of Wilson's books. But I could not put it down. I loved it.

I was wondering if anyone else had read it and if so.....any thoughts?

This was a pleasant surprise. The trailers had had a reverse effect on me: Convinced me I did not want to see it. I mean, it stars Adam Sandler, and there’s something about him—a smug undertone? an air of self-satisfaction, like I’m Adam Sandler and you’re not? I’m not sure. Whatever it is, it puts me off. But my daughter rented it over the weekend and I got stuck watching it.

To my amazement, I liked it. Sandler didn’t bring a whole lot to the table. Drew Barrymore and the supporting cast were good, but the warm, wry, and clever script made the film. Sometimes great preformances can save a mediocre script, but I suspect this was one of those films where it was all on the page before the first frame was exposed.

I just finished reading The Fifth Harmonic. It's a little different from Paul's other books, but I liked it. I stayed up until almost 3 a.m. reading it, in fact. I have to comment on one line in the book that I found rather jarring, though, and which I think will sound very dated in a few years:

"Captain Carcinoma was Hitler, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein, and Osama bin Laden all rolled into one..."

Say what? Those last two don't even come close to being in the same league as the first two. This is even more jarring considering the monsters whose places they took:

Stalin: 60 million murdered

Mao: 35 or 85 million murdered (depending on whether or not you include those who starved to death from Mao's forced collectivization of agriculture)

Even Hitler comes in a distant third to these two (20 million). Pol Pot is several places further down the list when it comes to absolute numbers killed, but one can easily argue that he ranks up there with Stalin, Mao, and Hitler given that he murdered a third of his country's entire population.

Saddam Hussein is far, far, far down on the list of 20th-century mass murderers. The world is and has been full of tyrants at least as bad for a long time.

As for bin Laden... if you compare him to other NGMs (non-governmental murderers), it's true that he's near or at the top of the list. But he's a dilettante when you compare him to the leaders of just about any sizable government; his organization doesn't have the resources to amass the piles of corpses that the modern state produces so easily and frequently.

Sorta like the other thread on here, but I was thinking more of a Non-FPW line.

I always liked Needful Things. One moment that will always stand out to me was when I read this the first time during my senior year. Towards the end of the book when all hell breaks loose, there's a scene where Ace sets off some dynamite under the bridge in town. I was reading this part while in study hall one day and at the exact same moment where the bridge goes up, someone had pulled the fire alarm in the school. I think I came a few feet off my chair when that happened.

My favorite short story is definately The Body Politic by Clive Barker. I've never read a story that made me laugh this hard but at the same time think to myself "What if this is really true? Would I ever know?". If you've never read this, it's located in the book The Inhuman Condition.

Overall, the scariest books I've read would have to be Salem's Lot, The Keep, and The Damnation Game.
