12/1 - A free story for the holidays. If you know someone who's never read Repairman Jack, this is a great place to start. If you've read LEGACIES, you've read this - but you might want to revisit. https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/385070
12/8 - Has anyone else seen "Get a Horse" - a new Mickey Mouse cartoon running shown before "Frozen." It's a brilliant mix of 1930s 2D and 21st century 3D that has some genuine laughs.
12/14 - NOLA: lunch at the Redfish Grill with David Morrell, Gregg Hurwitz, Jonathan Maberry, and Laura Morrigan. Delish.
12/14 - A rainy afternoon in NOLA. My room overlooks Royal Street and there's a guy in a doorway four floors below playing blues slide on an electric guitar. As Joni Mitchell would say, Playing Real Good for Free.
12/14 - Why are Jonathan Maberry and I smiling? We're at Erin Rose in NOLA and those are Irish car bombs before us. (the third is for Gregg Hurwitz who took the photo) https://twitter.com/GreggHurwitz/status/...45/photo/1
12/22 - I have the best readers. On my tour stop at Dark Delicacies last month I signed a copy of an anthology called HORRORSCOPE. It contained my "Menage a Trois" and I mentioned that I hadn't seen it before. The reader, Monte Christiansen, offered it to me but I refused. Didn't seem right to take a collector's book. Well, yesterday an envelope arrives containing a copy of HORRORSCOPE - Monte had found an extra and sent it. How cool is that?
12/22 - Proofing galleys for the SIBS trade paperback. It's sooo 90s NYC with smoking in restaurants and the Oak Bar at the Plaza and VHS and VH-1. But updating it would be like tinkering with a house of cards. Best to leave it be.
12/28 - for the moment MIDNIGHT SYMPHONY (9 novellas for 99 cents for the next 2 weeks) Includes the original "Midnight Mass" novella: http://tinyurl.com/lqpav9q
12/29 - "Journey to the West" looks so crazy it goes on my must-see list http://www.hulu.com/watch/575270
A year of collaborations. If you consider “The Dead World” as a collaboration with Edgar Rice Burroughs and “The Widow Lindley” as a collab with Blake Crouch, then DARK CITY was the only 2013 fiction that was pure me.
11/1 - after finishing the USO tour in England, I trained down to Brighton from Victoria Station in London for the World Fantasy Convention.
11/3 - Kudos to all involved in running WFC 2013. Well worth the trip. These folks know how to do it right.
11/4 - Back in the USSA... I think. Four time zones over 12 days plus a DST change. But it was all worth it.
11/7 - Folks, when you email me a quote from Plato, is it really necessary to follow his name with "ancient Greek philosopher?"
11/8 - An interesting meditation on young Repairman Jack and Holden Caulfield and other matters... http://fb.me/2vwxbnkgT
11/8 - Rolling Stone describes Lou Reed as "the outsider who changed the course of rock and roll." He always struck me as a talent-challenged poseur supported by a well-connected claque.
11/9 - I bought the Dragon dictating software.
11/10 - "Orphan Black" - finished season 1. Highly recommended. As I've said before, Tatiana Maslany might be the best actress you've never heard of
11/11 - From the USO tour: an empty chair and table left set in all the dining facilities in case a missing comrade returns: http://tinyurl.com/q7vzf6d
11/15 - Okay. Dark Delicacies done. Off to The Poisoned Pen tomorrow
11/16 - Shot a Semmerling at the Scottsdale Gun Club yesterday, courtesy of Steve Goode. Never felt a pistol kick like that. it's HEAVY! I leaned something: as a defensive weapon, it's kinda clunky. Okay, more than kinda - it's VERY clunky. Photos: the .45 Semmerling and me (NB: the slide moves forward) http://tinyurl.com/qg8q59q, plus a ventilated target http://tinyurl.com/nqukntt
11/17 - Hmmm...Baen Books sent me cover flats for THE WORLDS OF ERB anthology. Be nicer if they sent an author copy.
11/18 - ABOUT TIME! The scam artist of the century in jail. (Madoff bilked more money, but Kevin Trudeau has hurt far more people.) The way to know if Trudeau is lying is to watch his lips. If they're moving... http://fb.me/2u94UPGhK
11/20 - woes of the grammar geek: bothered by the line "...whatever happened, babe, to you and I..." in Southside Johnny's "I Don't Wanna Go Home"
11/21 - after all these years and all his commercials, I still haven't seen Papa John blink. Not once.
11/22 - 50 years ago today I remember my mother standing before the TV, dabbing her eyes. I expect the scene was repeated in millions of households across the nation, but she was an Irish Catholic from Massachusetts, so it was a bit more personal for her.
11/24 - a new, even-handed look at Michael Mann adaptation of "The Keep."http://www.nerdist.com/2013/11/schlock-awe-the-keep/
11/25 - saw "Nothing to Hide" off-Broadway last night. Sort of Penn & Teller lite - with cards only. They did a variation on P&T's water-bottle-suspended-over-the-stage trick. Lotsa fun
