Anyone else excited to catch the film adaptation of Don Winslow's Savages? I read both Savages and it's prequel, The Kings of Cool, and thought highly of them both. I'm starting to read other Winslow books, going back to his Neal Carey series.

Savages, for those who don't know, is about Ben and Chon, two Laguna Beach pot growers who've developed some killer herb due to Ben's degree in Botany. They share a common girlfriend/sex partner, O (for Ophelia). The Mexican drug Cartel makes an offer to Ben and Chon--either sell us your primo weed at cost and allow us take over your customers/territory, or you can have your heads chopped off. (The cartel sends them an mpeg of a row of decapitated heads.)

Ben and Chon decide they'd rather just quit then work for the Cartel. Elena, the matron of the Cartel, and someone you most definitely don't want as an enemy, orders O to be kidnapped and held until either Ben and Chon work three years for the Cartel or come up with a flat payment of twenty million dollars.

That's when Ben and Chon decide to rob the Cartel, in disguise, to produce the extra cash needed to buy O's freedom.

The film version stars Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, and Blake Lively as Chon, Ben and O. Salma Hayek, John Travolta and Benicio Del Toro also star as Elena, Dennis, a crooked DEA agent, and Lado, a stone cold killer who works for Elena.

The film opens July 6. It'll have some serious competition with Spidey, but I will definitely be choosing Savages over Spidey, at least as to what film I'll be seeing first. I'm a sucker for intelligent action films and I liked the book quite a lot, so I'll be going to see this with high hopes (no pun intended).Cool

Okay, I've said I'm not doing short fiction anymore, but I was asked to contribute to an E.R. Burroughs tribute anthology. How could I refuse? I spent the first half of my teens devouring his stuff. Terrible prose, excruciating dialogue, wonderful imagination. I know the ultimate secret of Pellucidar. Must... reveal...

Started it today.

I'm somewhat at a loss for words about this. Obviously I'm moved (and proud), but I'm also kind of dazed at the effect a fictional character can have on someone at the lowest point in his life. A damn shame what happened to this bright and happy guy who was enjoying life at ComiCon. (received through the website email and reprinted with his permission)

Hey Mr. Wilson, we met about five years ago while I was in the navy. When you came to Comic Con down in San Diego, I wrote to say I couldn't make it but wanted to meet you so you agreed to breakfast. You met me and two of my friends, and we just talked about Repairman Jack and took some picture, it's still one of the true highlights of my life.

This is not a question, I just had to tell you about my last year in the military.

Some bad things happened my final deployment and I came back with some scars physically and psychologically. Psychologically enough so that I needed some major counseling. The military counselors weren't skilled enough for how I was feeling, I was eventually put on suicide watch and sent to a specialist that works with severely depressed PTSD types. And for the first three weeks or so I couldn't really be reached, I didn't want to eat or fall asleep, especially fall asleep, because every time I did I would see the most horrific images.

After three weeks my counselor decided on a new approach, as we sat in one of our many 4 hour long sessions he asked me if I liked action adventure type stories or movies, when I said yes he asked me if I had a favorite one. Somebody that had to kill in his line of work. Obviously my first and only answer was Repairman Jack. I gave him a brief synopsis of Jack and the things he did for a living. All the questions began to be based around what Jack's reaction to my experiences if he were in my shoes would have been.

And for some reason I don't entirely understand, this fictional character began to make me feel infinitely better. I started to realize that Jack after seeing what I saw would have seen it as a life or death situation, not something that he enjoyed doing but in order to survive it had to be done. I had to cling to the character's response for a long time to get myself out of the mindset I was in, but eventually I began to feel better about it myself. Time really does heal all wounds. And now I'm mostly back to normal, I accept what happened as a necessity for survival, and it was war, and there are unfortunately casualties.

I thought it was important for you to know all this though, that not only did your character entertain many, many people, but it probably saved at least one life. Anyways I realize that this was probably never your intention but I thought that you might like to hear about it. Thank you.

So....who's watching the adventures of Sookie? Having read all the books, I'm really happy that the writers of the show are not sticking true to the books.

I love Lafayette! His character makes me laugh practically every time he opens his mouth. And Tara as a vampire? That's just delicious. Jason is just a dog...lol But I'm happy to see him as a lawman keeping Andy away from his vices.

Nicolas Cage is back!

Yesterday I saw his movie, "Seeking Justice". Well, recent his movies....like "Drive Angry", "Season of the Witch", "Bangkok Dangerous" were terrible. But this "Seeking Justice" is an excellent thriller with a lot of actions. Japanese title is "Hungry Rabbit".

The main characters are the English teacher of the high school, Will Gerard and his wife, the musician Laura. One night, Laura is assaulted and beat up by a rapist. Will stays in the hospital. Then a stranger named Simon tells that he belongs to an organization of vigilantes, and he offers to eliminate the rapist. In return, they would want a favor from Will in near future. Will should refuse it, but he accepts the agreement. Then, he got big problem...

Director is Roger Donaldson, he did good work in "No Way Out" with Kevin Costner vs. Gene Hackman. In "Seeking Justice", Nic Cage vs. Guy Pearce. Especially the Last sequences had high tension.

Check it with DVD. I recommend this to thriller film fan.

I can't wait. I DVR'd repeats that TNT had been playing the past two weeks (but it didn't catch all of them. Missed like 3 episodes in the middle). So I planned to watch the last 2 episodes to get caught up. Episode 9 didn't catch because of an NBA game so we watched Episode 10. They showed previews for tonight's Season opening and it looks pretty cool.
