Scott Miller mentioned this little movie in another thread, and I put in on my Netflix queue. I just finished watching it. Very enjoyable.

"Around the Bend" is a tender film about four generations of men in a family. They're estranged and come together through a series of events which culminate in one of the most original rode trips I've ever seen. It can be described as a buddies on the road movie, but it's much more than that. I found it moving and quite wonderful.

Michael Caine is superb, as always, and Christopher Walken is the heart of the film. He's great, what more can I say. I'm a big fan of Joshua Lucas, who does a fine job here. Glenn Headley, whom I see too little of these days, has a great supporting role.

It made me think about other movies that detail generational relationships amongst men in families -- bonds between grandfather, father, son and grandson. I'm wondering if this is a theme that is not mined very often in cinema. There are a few movies on this subject; I wish there were more.

I have to confess, I was one of the few people on the planet who never saw any episodes of this when it was on network TV.

I've been working my way through the boxed DVD sets and really, really enjoying it. I'm watching an episode a day (or two). (I just finished season 4). This was a very well written, well-plotted, well-acted series. I love the way small plot points reappear later and throwaway characters return.

I'll be sorry when I run out of episodes. Maybe I'll start on Angel then.

I loved it! It had that futuristic aura to it like Masque. And what everyone said about the wire. Ooooooh! Next to read is Implant. After I finish Dean Koontz/Kevin Anderson's Frankenstein: The Prodigal Son - it's really good!

SPOILERS**SPOILERS**SPOILERS**SPOILERS**SPOILERS**SPOILERS**

My wife and I saw this last night. Sorry folks, but this is an interesting concept gone horribly awry. Adrien Brody is Jack Starks, a Gulf War vet who is sent home with amnesia after being shot in the head. While hitchhiking he comes across a drug addict and her daughter, broken down on the side of the road. He fixes their vehicle and is later he gets a ride from a guy who's stolen a station wagon. The guy kills the cop who pulls him over and because Starks can't remember, he is tried for the crime after the man escapes. He is sent to a criminally insane institution where Kris Kristofferson is a doctor with a unique kind of therapy that unintentionally jettisons Brody into the future. While all this sounds interesting, keep in mind I'm capsulating. This movie is slow with only teases of picking up. I have no idea how 'Terror has a new name' is the tagline. I buy that Starks is terrified while strapped into a straightjacket and locked in a morgue drawer, but it doesn't translate to the viewer. And the assaults of memories forgotten as his mind has nothing to do but feed on itself are an attack on the viewer's eyes and ears. It doesn't evoke any emotion other than the agitation you'd get from standing too close to one of those tornado-warning clarions. I won't give away too much for you masochists who'll insist on inflicting yourselves with this jagged-shard-of-glass-to-the-eye in a movie's cloak, but I'll leave you to insert your own expletive in the sentence, "What the ____ was that?" as you leave the theater.

Last night, I watched The Medusa Touch on TV. I've never seen this before.

At first, I thought this is minor movie, but......Wow! This is awesome! Has anyone seen this movie? This movie was made in 1979, nevertheless the last spectacle scenes were frightened me. Simple terror, but it worked for me. Of course, Not CG.

In 70s, a lot of disaster movies was made in Hollywood. The Towering Inferno, Airport, etc... But, this movie, The Medusa Touch is not like those movies. Psychokinesis lead to disaster and panic.

If you wanna feel thrill and horror, check it. You definitely feel surprise.

B-movie, Hooray!

I thinking Leelee Sobieski, she's 23 now, will be old enough when this gets made. She was great in The Glass House and Joan of Arc

Emily Proctor (CSI Miami) if they make it now

This is new Japanese movie.

After the atom bomb dropped onto Hiroshima in August, 1945. A submarine called "a witch of steel" carried ultimate weapon "Lorelei", and left a port for a certain duty....

At first glance, it look like a Hollywood movie, but this is truly Japanese movie. It reminded me of Crimson Tide, The Hunt for Red October.....or BLACK WIND???? (Lorelei = Black Wind-like weapon........I hope not!).

Wacky British humor at its best. Inspector Fowler and his inept constables make for amusing telly. David Haig as Detective Inspector Grim is particularly funny. I'm not sure how available it is, but it is certainly worth a look if you can get it.

F.Paul,

Is the story that you have contributed to the Cemetery Dance anthology Dark Delicacies a new one?

I'm trying to decide whether I want to shell out $150.

Cheers,

Brett

p.s. I had a gimlet last night and toasted your good health.
