I just watched "Primer," a unique, low budget indy film about 4 young scientist types who work together in a garage at night to create what seems to be computer stuff. Then 2 of them break off to work together and create...god knows what.

I wanted to like this movie. I was intrigued by it, but so confused as to who was who and what sort of time travel were they involved in and what they hell had they DONE, anyway.

At any rate, despite confusion so massive that I'm not even sure what I saw in terms of story, I would recommend this film to any fledgling filmmakers. It's got a well constructed look and just 'cuz I didn't follow it doesn't mean it's not good.

On the other hand, ordinarily I'm no slouch when it comes to figuring out plots, twists, and general themes. So maybe it's not such a good thing that I've no idea what I saw.

This has got to be one of the more confusing posts I've ever written. Testament to the film....

Against my better judgement, akin to the time I tried to stop a moving fan with my penis, and just as painful, I took in a viewing of the horrendous Bewitched starring America's new favorite sweetheart Will Ferrell.

Never a huge fan of the Elizabeth Montgomery driven original series I don't know why I expected this to be any better. Not liking the source material may seem blasphemous but I never found it funny.

I thought this movie would be in the same vein as one of my all time favorite mvies, The Brady Bunch. I was under the impression that it would make fun of the original series and therefore I was all for it. Well not only did this comedy not make fun of the original series, it was so self referential, it knew it was a big screen remake of a old sitcom and milked it for all it was worth. Making passing references to the original, setting the movie in the real world where the actors in the film were actors making a small screen remake.

Nicole Kidman was the polar opposite of TV's Samantha. Where Montgomery was cool and collected, Kidman was a babbling nervous mess of a witch who just wants to be normal.

Ferrell plays the same character he has played in every movie and tv show since the inception of his career. His lines were horrendous and delivered with a sheer smugness like the actor thought this film would amount to something monumental.

The on-screen chemistry between the two leads was non-existent no matter how much the actors professed in every interview that they became the best of friends in real life. The interviews were just as awkward as Tom Cruise's on-air Oprah confession of his love for the test-tube sweetheart Katie Holmes.

The movies only saving grace, (and no, surprisingly it is not Michael Cain or Shirley McLaine) is Kristen Chenoweth. She ate up every scene she was in remeniscent of the character Paulette from the Legally Blonde films.

Skip Bewitched, the only magical thing this insipid comedy manages to do is make $8.00 disappear into thin air.

A very odd thing happened to me. I had decided to read through all of the RJ books again. (As I was reading, I realized that I did not have a copy of Gateways. That is also odd, but that isn't what I am talking about).
While I was well into my reading, I got an e-mail message from Count Audoin de Dampierre, who is the owner of Dampierre Campagnes. He had heard that I had been writing about his wines, and he thanked me for doing this. I explained to him that he must have mistaken me for someone else as I had never had the pleasure of drinking a Dampierre before. (And yes, I did confirm that it was the real Count Dampierre).
Well, shortly therafter, I started reading "All the Rage" again, eager because of all of the wine references, especially all the Bordeaux references. What happens next? I had totally forgotten this, but what is the champagne that Milos' supermodel girlfriend drinks? That's right, Dampierre. Of the tens of thousands of winemakers in the world, I get a mysterious message from one whose wine I am just about to read about in a RJ book. Wierd, huh?

Got a quick question today:

Who were the little furry creatures that were in the shack and re-forged the sword for Jack and Bill Ryan? I have not read all of FPW's works, so these may vey well be characters from one of his other worlds. My first guess was that they were Terys or some other creatures from the LaNague world that I have yet to explore... Thanks for your help, guys..

I just revisited Nicholas Roeg's 1973 "Don't Look Now," starring Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland. It is one of the most visually intriguing horror/metaphysical movies I've ever seen.

If you are looking for 21st century horror, where blood and gore is splashed everywhere and spooks jump out from corners just to get a scream from the audience, where you've got to leave your brain at the door, this movie is not for you.

It's very much of its time. I remember being confused and baffled throughout much of the first viewing 32 years ago. Of course, I was in college at the time and purposefully watched movies in state of...befuddlement, shall we say. In retrospect, I wasn't sure if my fractured memories of the movie were due to the director or me.

But even after all these years, I remember the visuals of that film and the editing, which appears at first glance to jump over all the place. But there is a cohesiveness within this jigsaw puzzle of a movie.

Can I give unreserved praise for this film? I don't think so. The look of the film, the wonderful use of color and a dreary Venice in winter, all remained with me. It was the story that didn't. I vaguely remembered the plot but not specifics, so seeing it 32 years later was like watching anew. Somehow, there is a taint of hokiness in the ending, which I'd forgotten completely.

If you want to see the ultimate sex scene, graphic but shot and edited with such love, respect and understanding of the relationship between husband and wife, check out this movie. I'd forgotten all about that scene, believe it or not. It created quite a stir way back when. Compare that scene to sex on screen nowadays and you'll see how far we've fallen.

If you're a cineaste and can enjoy a film that builds slowly, check it out.

Here's the worst news; I just heard someone is doing a remake. Why oh why?

I have been viewing this forum for a while, but never thought to join until now. I am a Wilson fan and own and enjoy most of his books. The first time I ever heard FPW mentioned was in the back of a Hellboy comic. The Keep was mentioned as an inspiration by Mike Mignola.

I enjoy the fact that this is a community of FPW fans and you actually share your thoughts on other authors as well (not much into politics). I have picked up some other books because of the recommendations I have seen here and mostly enjoyed those novels as wel.

While waiting for my copy of Infernal from Gauntlet, I am currently reading Brian A. Hopkins "The Licking Valley Coon Hunters Club". The story rocks and I would highly recommend it.

Happy to be on board...

From Netflix: The neurological processes and "quantum uncertainty" of life are explored in this film. Thrust from her mundane life into an Alice in Wonderland-like world, Amanda (Marlee Matlin) must develop a brand-new perception of the world and the people she interacts with. Interviews with various experts are interspersed throughout the film, which combines narrative, documentary and animation.

What the Bleep Do We Know!? is presented in laymen terms and is an exciting look at quantum physics and quantum uncertainty. It explores how we as humans influence our surroundings and make certain events happen subconsciously. The film is presented as a narrative drama about one woman's awaking to the world around her and how it works. Mixed in with that is explanations of physics by mystics and scientists.

One of the more interesting elements of the film is learning how the brain works. By that I mean how we sense things, how the brain interprets that information, the neurological pathways these senses take, and how the information is stored to later be remembered. And, through all the possible pathways in the brain, how what you remember is not the same as what happened.

For anyone that is even remotely interested in science, physics, the debate of religion and God versus science, this film is an extremely enjoyable film. I highly recommend it and have to thank Jimbo for recommending it to me.

Has anyone else that uses Netflix had any problems lately? It had gotten to the point where I was receiving movies the day after they shipped to me, but recently it is taking much longer.

There are two movies that they shipped on 6/28 and I still haven't received them as of 7/1.

But I got one that they shipped on 6/30.
