There was another thread about Shoot 'Em Up, but I decided to start a new one because the other had tons of (marked) spoilers and I didn't want people to have to close their eyes to read my post. Wink

I watched Shoot 'Em Up last night and I have to say it's been a long time since I've had that much fun watching a movie. I see lots of good movies, even great movies, but this one was just so much fun to watch. The whole thing is absurd, but it knows it's absurd and makes no apologies for that fact. It isn't high art by any means, but boy was it entertaining. Big Grin

I know MYTHBUSTERS has been around for quite a while, so I'm late to the game on this one. But I'm just discovering massive doses of MYTHBUSTERS. This show is hilarious and educational. I really like Adam Savage. Very smart, kinda cute and funny red-headed guys catch my fancy. I just laughed myself silly watching Savage attempt to walk on water. That was just too too funny. All of the folks on the show can laugh at themselves and admit mistakes, two very charming traits.

It's a fun show where lots of stuff goes BOOM and you learn about physics and chemistry painlessly.

ATONEMENT is not the movie I thought it would be. I expected a love story circa WWII England, and it is that, but so much more. I'm not a fan of Keira Knightly. I find her pinched face and chronic pained expression difficult to watch. But she was terrific here, and that's high praise coming from me about that particular actress. Up to this point, for me James McAvoy has been the large-nippled fawn in THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. He creeped me out so profoundly in NARNIA that I've all but forgotten him in THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. But he, too, is terrific in ATONEMENT. Who knew I'd be so surprised by the leads.

The biggest surprise for me, though, is the story. I won't say anything about it here. See the film without knowing much about it. I liked the pacing, the way time was used, and the beautiful look of it. It should win an award for costumes, or at least a nomination.

Keep your eye on Saoirse Ronan, a young girl who plays a pivotal role. She's terrific, too.

I was going to skip ATONEMENT because of my natural aversion to Knightley and McAvoy. I am glad I didn't.

I've read some negative reviews of ATONEMENT. Well, that's what makes the world go round. I didn't find it a waste of my time.

Well....I wanted to love JUNO, given the press it's been getting and the preliminary award nominations. But I didn't. It was OK, made tolerable for me by the superb supporting cast. The heroine was annoyingly spunky, bright, and quick witted, thanks to the script. I wasn't drawn in to the film as I should have been because, despite what should have been inherently likable qualities in the lead character, I just couldn't get behind Juno, herself. Ellen Page did a credible job as Juno McGuff, but the character as written by Diablo Cody was just too cloyingly smart/cute for me.

It's a nice little movie. The audience clapped mildly at the close of the film. I nearly fell asleep a few times. It was decidely a mixed bag for me, but I have the feeling that a young audience will love it.

Also known as..."Alien vs. Predator II?" "Predator IV?" "Alien VI?" Ouch, it boggles the mind!

Well, I just saw the second installment of this unholy fanboy hybrid of two successful film franchises. And what do I want to say about it? Unoriginal, unimaginative, and ridiculously derivative of every previous flick in these bridged realities. The human characters are cardboard cutouts of the thinnest material. Their inevitable rising body count barely ruffles a feather as the so-called plot ensues.

Things pick up immediately from the end of the previous Alien vs. Predator flick as the small and plot-friendly remote town of Crested Butte, Colorado undergoes an explosion of Alien births that rivals the beginning of the post-1945 American baby boom. And standing tall to them all is one badass Predator Chieftain.

Several bloody mini battle set pieces ensue, with all of it ending in a Xeno-a-Xeno between Chieftain Predator and hybrid PredAlien on a hospital rooftop...and all of it feels just so damn pointless.

And the end of the flick itself? More derivative of the much more original RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD than anything else.

Will there be a AvP III? Maybe not. This flick does not end with a cliffhanger like it's predecessor. Let's hope the studio takes a hint and puts this monstrosity to its final rest.

My longer review can be read in my "blog" at my website.

I give "ALIEN VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM," TWO-AND-ONE-HALF out of five cans of diet cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper.
