I believe that was the first novel by the great, and I do mean great, Poul Anderson.

Bought for $0.62 at the used book store. I actually learned about this book when I read Stephen King's Tommyknockers. One of the charecters mentions the plot of Brainwave being similar to what is happening in thier town.

Currently re-re-rereading The Manitou by Graham Masterton. I may read Pariah next. It's one of my favorites by him.
