yeah, pretty much- though s-e-x is brought up.... politely. surprised me.
Tom is such an ass- we knew it of course from the series but really, just an Ass. the family dynamic is very endearing, and there's going to be some details about Jack that come into sharp focus after reading this and seeing why he says/does/likes/dislikes something. awesome way to prequel!

if you haven't ordered this, DO. I am loaning my copy to a YA tomorrow so she can read it over the weekend and get the opinion of someone who doesn't already know Jack...I think it will paint a very different picture.

ImDeranged Wrote:S-E-X ? In a YA book? You have got to be kidding me. The last YA book I read was Dydeetown World and there was nothing about S-E-X in it. It was a nice little novel that the American Library Association and the New York Public Library, among others put on there recommended reading lists. It was set in the future where we are able to take cells from dead celebrities, clone them then sell them to be pimped out as prostitutes because they aren't real....but there was no S-E-X in it. That would've been wrong.

there isn't any sex in it.
I can't explain- for one it would ruin it- it's subtle.
you'll see.

Let me know the reaction.

Last year I tested it on a group of 20 teens (even mix male and female) in a reading group in PA. To dodge the suck-up factor, I made 2 conditions: they weren't to know that the teacher knew me, nor that I would see their comments. The teacher told me that kids who usually took a week or two to finish a book were knocking off Secret Histories over a weekend. The comments were so universally positive -- many of them glowing -- that I hesitated showing the publisher for fear they'd think I was putting them on.

Can't expect that from all kids, but it's encouraging.

I'm still shake my head in wonder at the thought of Dydeetown World on those lists. I wrote it for adults. The hero is a wirehead who gets off on hooking up to recordings of other people having sex. The heroine is a prostitute.

Wait, she was a prostitute? I must have missed that. I thought she was a hospitality consultant. Smile

A reaction like that wouldn't surprise me at all. Jack is a really engaging character as an adult; I can just imagine how interesting he'd be as an adolescent. Cool

If indie booksellers will have this soon, does this mean I'll be able to order it online from them? Which stores'll have it? I don't wanna wait till the end of May to read this...

450 indie booksellers will be receiving an ARC through their organization, Booksense. Some of them will read it (the majority, we hope -- the whole purpose is to spark orders), some may give it to a valued customer, and some will stick it on eBay. But they won't have the actual trade edition to sell until the end of May.

ImDeranged Wrote:"Hospitality consultant" ? I like that one but I think in a "PC" age we should rename them "Happy Endings Facilitators" because it sounds so "positive" (yes there is a pun in there)- If you are Happy you are Positive.

"Outplacement specialist", "Stress Reduction Technologist", "Fluid Transfer Technician", "Infectious Disease Vector". The possibilities just keep coming. Don't get me started.
