Just finished reading The Wringer. I'm glad I went to the trouble of tracking down a copy of Night Screams. I love how long this one was; I could almost imagine it to be a fix-it from one of the novels. I appreciate how the victim was an Arab in a time when they're usually cast as villians, if mentioned at all.

I guess the reason for his being victimized wasn't really anything specific? He just decided to...vent?

The psychology of blame at the end was very realistic. Awesome!

Now there's no more Jack to read until next year...Sad

Next year can't come fast enough. I'm so psyched for them!

I've been thinking awhile about including it in a novel, that's why it hasn't been reprinted. Of course, the story was written pre-9/11 so it needs a drastic rewrite. But it could form an interesting counterpoint to Joey's anti-Arab rants in Infernal.

Interlude at Duanes was a great one. I really liked seeing Jack be so inventive with his surroundings. I was in the City on Monday and left my offerings in memory of the big guy myself. If you've read the story you'll understand.

Funny you should mention that story. When I visited NYC for the first time last year to see Son of Biggles (who was interning with Goldman Sachs at the time) I saw a Duane's near the Empire State Building, perhaps the one Paul based his story on! I must say it gave me a thrill!

I remember wondering if I'd missed their backstory in some other anthology when I was reading Infernal.

I plan on visiting a Duane's when I get the time to explore New York. Big Grin
