Anybody else want to know more about Glaekens story. Like how he became the earths protector. Something more than demonsong.

You're not the only one. I think there are a lot of us who would love to see a trilogy about The First Age.

I'd love to know more of Glaeken's story. His immortality is a brilliant springboard for future stories, that could be told in numerous eras and locales. I found it interesting that in the beginning of The Keep he had been living a relatively simplistic and hand-to-mouth existence considering the amount of money he'd accrued throughout the ages. Perhaps in his lifetimes of living he'd found the secret of happiness--or at least contentment--was Keep It Simple? There's rich and fertile ground for more stories but the question is: is The Man interested in continuing with any of the characters from The Adversary Cycle. From what I've read here on this website, it seems after the Repairman Jack Young Adult trilogy he's decided to put these characters to rest.

Believe me, I'm as bummed out as anyone. I've only read three RJ novels and I'm already mourning the fact he's nearing the end of his road. I'm taking my time with these novels and savoring them like a vintage wine, because I know they're finite.

But I can understand why FPW has to move into different fields for his art to flourish, and I look forward to his future work.

From my perspective, Glaeken is one of the most tragic characters in the series. It's clear he'd come to the point where his immortality was torturing him. Then, at the end of The Keep, he was finally released from his horrible burden and got to live a normal life with the woman he loved.

Then, when he was old, grizzled and ready for his final rest, what happens? He ends up right back where he started: as the Ally's immortal sentinel, the woman he loves practically at death's door, and an endless existence of standing at attention for the Ally to look forward to.

I honestly think it would have been more merciful if he'd died along with Rasalom at the end of Nightworld.

I agree. At least Rasalom had his plots and rebirth to keep things interesting. And inflicting pain, hard to grow tired of that when it feeds you strength. Glaeken spent the eons waiting. Likely traveling a lot so people don't notice his never-ending youth and keeping few friends. To have a taste of normal life, and have it ripped away so close to the end, that's harsh.

Tragic yes, but think about how wonderful to have the time to do/learn all about every facet of life that interests you. I guess the tragedy aspect comes in watching those you love grow old and die. Hard to believe one could grow bored with all the different things life has to offer, but then again, I'm only 38--ask me again when I'm 3, 335 years old.Cool

Theoretically, Glaeken was supposed to have been born sometime in the 14th century BCE (I think; somebody correct me if I'm wrong). That would make him roughly 15,000 years old! The guy's probably done and seen everything there is to do and see. At that point, I'd be shocked if he even remembered where he was born and who is parents were.

Yeah, being able to do and learn everything there is in the world would be great in theory, but probably not that much in practice when everyone else around you lives and dies within a fraction of your existence. It would be impossible to form lasting, long-term relationships; you'd be forever disconnected from every other person on the planet. And to have the opportunity to live a normal life and forge a connection with the person you love, and then have it cruelly ripped away like that after you've already spent millenia already having seen and done everything....

Let's just say that immortalitly really sucks. Jack should be on his knees giving thanks that he so narrowly avoided having to take Glaeken's place.

I would love to see a 'Glaeken - Secret Histories' novel.

Who was he before the Ally chose him as The Sentinel?
How was he stripped of his branches (a spear has no branches)?
Was he chosen before his birth, as it was eluded that Jack was?
Has the Ally/Otherness been fighting over this planet in the far far distant past?

Since Humans, in our current sentient bipedal form, have been on the planet for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years, were there any predecessors to Glaeken and Rasalom? Perhaps there were, and they simultaneously eliminated each other, forcing the Ally and the Otherness to choose new representatives.

On that note....How about a secret history for Rasalom?

As I've said, the First Age beckons, but I've other things to complete first.
