Agreed, and then some.

As bad as he would be a Repairman Jack, he's FAR worse as Jack Reacher. At least RJ is supposed to be unimposing. Reacher is supposed to be a great big badass. Tom Cruise is far from that...even in the movies.

Honestly, Tom Cruise films are generally far better than Ryan Reynolds films. I don't really like Cruise, but looking at his career, I actually like most of his movies. Some of them are terrific. I can't think of a single role Reynolds has played, that I've actually liked.

I'd prefer Cruise over Reynolds, but Wouldn't choose either.

I don't know his name, but the guy that played Joe Morelli in One for the Money seems like he'd make a good Repaiman Jack.

I'm thinking the kid (forgot his name) who played the Human Torch and Captain America might not be a bad pick for Jack. The variation between those two roles shows he's got some range

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher? The casting director should be taken out back a kangaroo courthouse and shot. I'd have cast The Rock, as he's big enough and a better actor anyway. Or even Vin Diesel -- it's not like playing Jack Reacher requires _that_ much depth.

Haven't seen all that much of Cruise's work, his early crap pissed me off too much. I realize that the technical garbage in Top Gun wasn't really his fault, but he seemed to fit right into it like a politican into a pediatric whorehouse.

I'll wait to see the Jack Reacher movie until it's available with commercial interuptions. Some things I'd rather not pay for with my own money. I enjoy the books too much. Never even read one till this past winter, a copy of Killing Floor was in a box we'd bought at a yard sale last fall. La Esposa liked them too, we wound up buying all we could find. Lisa took half a dozen Reacher novels to the hospital for her knee replacement. She never got to read more than one and a half of those. (The operation was a success, but the patient died).

I'm thinking a good variant is actor who looks about like Gary Sinise 10-15 years ago. Tom Cruise isn't as "usual" as Jack in FPW's texts.

I just hope they choose a somewhat regular looking guy to play Jack. It's one of the key elements that make Jack, Jack. The fact he can blend and be unassuming is vital to his work. Gary Sinise would be awesome, Peter. But as you noted, too old now. But someone like Sinise, who doesn't neccessarily look tough or imposing.

I was shocked that Cruise is playing Jack Reacher. Not that big a fan of the books but even I know he's all kinds of wrong for that role. One of my favorite literary characters, Travis McGee, is supposedly going to be played by Leonardo Di Caprio in the near future. Physically, he doesn't seem to fit but he's an excellent actor, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until I see it. Another favorite character of mine, the criminal mastermind Parker, is coming back to the big screen in Jan. played by Jason Statham. I don't know about that one, but I'll reserve judgement also.

Sometimes an actor on paper doesn't seem like a decent fit but when you see the film, you can be blown away. I remember thinking how wrong Elliot Gould was for Phiip Marlowe when I discovered The Long Goodbye film a while back. But the film and Gould were both damn good.

I don't understand why folks seem to think the cable route wouldnt work - look what HBO is doing with Game of Thrones - they don't need to do every book of RJ, and can have flashbacks for some of the stuff in The Keep, Reborn & The touch when necessary. I think HBO or showtime would be great with it as a long term tv show.

I agree. Cruise would make a terrible RJ. He would totally ruin the movie for me.

How about Mark Wahlberg? He's small enough to be non-threatening and yet muscular enough to show he works out and packs a wallop. Maybe on the short side, but kind of average-looking in most respects.

I hate to say it, because I usually don't like most films he's in, but Matt Damon is unassuming and average enough to play Jack, and we all know his attatchment to the film would automatically green-light it. He can be a pretty good actor when he has the right material to work with.

Ryan Reynolds--don't really think he's that great a fit. But I could think of many who'd be even worse.

Crimson King Wrote:I'd rather the film never be made.

Jack's story, particularly in The Tomb, is not a one-shot story. It's a long arc that requires a lot of explanations and time changes. If we get just a stand alone Jack movie or series, I think we miss out a lot on what makes Jack, Jack.

I only agree that I don't want the film made if it is not made well, and it doesn't pander, try to be kid-friendly or have gratuitous formulaic inserts. Also, I hope they keep the The Tomb/Rakosh story intact without stealing plot references from other RJ novels, thus spoiling their ability to be used in their appropriate location in later novels.

However, in a well-written screenplay, they could add elements that would help set up future novelizations. For example, they show an advertisement for the Dormentalists on a TV in the background (foreshadowing events 7 novels later). Things like that I wouldn't mind added to a script.
