Oh, and BTW:
John Goodman as "Abe"????? What were you thinking? He didn't even make a good "King Ralph". What a joke. Plus the fact that he's not jewish.
So he's not Jewish . . . so what!

Does an actor HAVE to be Catholic to portray the Pope?

Do you object to a Lakota Indian playing the part of a Mohican? (Russell Means in Last Of The Mohicans.)

Or an Andes Indian actor playing the part of a Cheyenne and later an Apache Medicine Man? (Pato hoffman in Cheyenne Warrior and Geronimo.)

A Cherokee Indian playing a Pawnee, a Huron, and an Apache? (Wes Studi in Dances With wolves, The Last Of The Mohicans, and Geronimo.)

Or a Canadian actor of The Six Nations playing a Lakota? (Graham Greene in Dances with Wolves.)

Robbie Coltrain (Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies) could do an excellent job of playing Abe as well -- and he's not Jewish either.

Now that I think about it, Jewish actors play non-Jewish parts all the time: For example, the British actor Jason Issacs has played the parts of a British Cavalry Officer, (Colonel Tavington in The Patriot) an evil wizard, (Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies) a Major in the Marine Corps (Windtalkers) and numerous other parts. And how about:

1. Lauren Bacall

2. Tom Bosley

3. Tony Curtis

4. Peter Falk

5. Ross Martin

6. Marilyn Monroe

7. Paul Newman

8. Peter Sellers

8. Rod Serling

10. Dyan Cannon

11. Elliot Gould

12. Leonard Nimoy

13. William Shatner

14. Elizabeth Taylor

15. James Caan

16. Kirk Douglas

17. Michael Douglas

18. Harrison ford

19. Scott Glenn

20. Sara Michelle Gellar

If Jews can play non-Jews, why can't a non-Jew play the part of a Jew?

As usual, you have totally missed the point. Picture Woody Allen playing "James Bond" (which he actually did in 1966!)
John Goodman only plays violent, bad tempered jackasses. And it is my guess that those roles are all typecasted, but I have never heard of John doing anything outside of the movie roles (like Mel Gibson, et al). However, being of Jewish descent myself, I just couldn't picture John playing that role. I get the strong impression that Abe is Jewish, although I don't recall ever reading anything that basically said that he was, just all the New York Jewish euphemisms that Abe is constantly using. Funny, but the California Jewish community doesn't seem to use all of those old Yiddish sayings and euphemisms, from what I have observed.
However, this whole subject is moot, since as I have said before, this movie series will never get off the ground. And that is the funny thing, the "Sandman Slim" book series, which only has two books (the second one came out in November last year) is already in preproduction for a movie! According to Richard Kadrey, the author stated that before his first book was published, he had several studios contacting him for rights to make a movie! It just boggles the mind!

Abe is supposed to be overweight. And Jack Nicholson? Maybe in a fat suit and if there was some kind of medicine he could take for overacting.Big Grin

Abe IS overweight!

Paul once said that when he was writing the character of Abe, the image he had in his mind was that of Jack Weston.

I don't know why, but I always pictured ABE as more of a "Fyvush Finkel" sort.

I actually always pictured him being close to Rob Reiner, but I don't think he's really an actor.

He's also too busy finding ways of limiting choices in everyone's life. That takes a lot of time.

I always thought Robert Prosky would have made a good Abe. R. I. P. Robert.

Since he's gone, I'd like to see Chuck Low do it.
