A Triffid is a venomous plant capable of animal-like behavior. It feeds on rotting meat, and is able to uproot itself and move around.
It comes from the post apocalyptic novel -- The Day of the Triffids -- written by English novelist John Wyndham in 1951.
In 1962, there was a movie made from the book, it starred Howard Keel.
