I am most curious about Dr Richard Alpert.

Where did he come from? How long has he been on the island? And how old is he really?
He appears to never age ....

And is he one of the islands original inhabitants? Was he ever apart of Dharma?

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

I've been wondering about that, as well. Does he not age, or is that just a matter of makeup not being sufficient to make the actor looks so much younger when he was first seen by Ben as a child?

Did anyone happen to notice any of the debris from the plane wreck that was resting on the floor of the ocean, and was there anything significant?

I've been saying since last year, when we first saw Richard Alpert as he met young Ben that he, Richard, was dressed in clothing that could have been from the era of the Black Rock ship. Of course, that clothing should have long since rotted on his body, even if his body didn't age, but I think he could date back that far. Who knows, he could even be a one of the folks who built the 4-toed statue.

The writers and producers of the show have stated in various podcasts and on the extra disc in the DVD boxed set of Season 3 that they see a special role for Richard Alpert. They likened what he does to a certain specific person who is related to the search for the new Dalai Lama. That person searches the world for the person who will be the next Dalai Lama. Richard might be doing that for Jacob. Richard searches for special people who may have powers akin to Jacob's, whatever they may be. Remember how Richard responded to young Ben when he realized that Ben could see his dead mother and speak with her. He was excited, though in a subtle way, and told Ben to be patient. Many years later, he helped set Ben up as the next in line to the throne, so to speak, in terms of the Island and Jacob, though we really don't know who or what Jacob really is. Richard was key to helping Locke kill his father, which was required, apparently, by the Island or Jacob or whatever. Richard sees that Locke is important to the Island, perhaps more important now than Ben is.

So Richard is a quiet, behind the scenes VIP on that Island. I can't wait to see his backstory.

I saw suitcases opened with clothing strewn about. Nothing out of the ordinary for a plane crash, as far as I could see.

Thanks for that link to the wikipedia piece on Richard Alpert. I love that he shares the name with the man known as Ram Dass, some of whose books I read long ago.

I have a theory about how Richard Alpert (and the late, not so great Ethan) can leave and return to the Island when it seems others cannot. My theory probably is bogus because I can never, ever outguess those brilliant writers and creators of LOST.

There was a video that appeared in the DVD boxed set of Season 3 and it also appeared on abc.com. It involved rabbits and the scientist whom we've seen on the Dharma instructional videos. The scientist is holding rabbit #15, then something happens. The building shakes like a mild earthquake has hit and someone off camera yells, watch out for the rabbits...keep them apart. Suddenly you see another rabbit #15 who's appeared on a shelf behind the scientist, who is still holding the original rabbit #15. The scientist yells at the cameraman to stop filming.

So maybe there is some way that the Island can create two of someone or some being. I believe the way that happens has to do with time, which is why the rabbits can't be brought together. It's not cloning, over and over the writers have said there is no cloning on the Island. But maybe somehow Richard can be in Portland interviewing Juliet even while he is on the Island because the events are happening in some sort of time warp.

Hey, what do I know? This is just a big guess.

A thought about Miles. When he was doing his Ghostbusters act he didn't come off as all that helpful. It seemed more like he was trapping the ghost there against its will and only let it go because it coughed up some cash. And what was with the vacuum cleaner?

I knew I recognized him from somewhere. He guest starred on one of the final Sopranos episodes. He played one of Uncle Junior's lieutenants in the group home he was living in. He was great in that episode.

I agree. I think Miles is edgy, snide, smart, and totally self-serving. He's a great character.

Miles is no saint. He wasn't particularly kind to the banged up pilot. When Kate asked Daniel, the spacy physicist, to put his gun away, Daniel replied "I I can't because, uh, Miles, uh, would kill me." As the helicopter began to go down, Daniel was crying out "no, no," when he was supposed to jump. Miles just took him and shoved him out saying "hey, genius, GO!"

On the other hand, as the copter was going down and the redhead anthropologist couldn't find her vest (that all important bullet proof vest), Miles told her to take his. Don't know what that means for Miles in the future.

I think Miles is the most interesting character introduced in a long while.

Thanks for that, I knew I'd see him somewhere, too, but couldn't remember where. You're right, he was terrific.

When I saw the box of gas masks and biohazard suits, I became really concerned for the folks on the Island. It looked like it could be Ben's Purge all over again. As usual, Ben is a step ahead of everyone, and maybe that's why he warned that everyone on the Island would be killed, and that Danielle should take Alex way far away. Wonder who's Ben's man on the freighter?

More evidence that the new crew is Dharma. Protection from being gassed again.

Yes, and who'll be dispensing that gas? The Others or the Freighter People?
