Over here, "arse" is pretty much meaningless silly word that is never ever used except on BBC America, perhaps, or in a novel written by a British author. It just sounds funny when someone actually uses it, and no one does. It's not even close to a dirty word that needs a hyphen, at least not here. Ass, as in "she has a nice ass", well that sounds normal in American English. Adding that "r", just plain sounds strange to our ears.
I can't explain exactly why, though.
