saynomore Wrote:M. Night Shamalamalama said that his favorite part of the Spiderman movie was when Peter Parker was discovering his powers and dealing with them. He tried, and succeeded IMHO, in capturing that portion of the superhero saga in his movie "Unbreakable".
Agreed. I loved
Unbreakable.
saynomore Wrote:I think the first episode of Heroes captured that part only to a certain extent and only with a few characters. The indestructable Cheerleader's character was well-developed (no pun intended), as was the guy who thought he could fly (can fly?), but the others were fastforwarded, such as the Japanese Time Bender. And next week we still have more characters to be developed.
I agree and disagree.
I liked the cheerleader’s storyline. They left some subtlety to it. Am I the only one who picked up on the possibility that her father is abusing her and she’s trying to kill herself?
I liked the stripper’s storyline. The “whore with a heart of gold” is kind of cliché, but I thought the actress pulled it off, and again, the show gave us just enough to keep me interested without spilling everything.
Flyboy didn’t do it for me. I like the actor a lot (although I kept looking for Rory Gilmore), but the writing just wasn’t there for him. “I’m having dreams I can fly. I think I can fly!” Puh-leeze. I’ve dreamed I can fly lots of times. I’ve had very vivid, recurring dreams. It doesn’t make me think I can pull any of it off. Him saying that when he stepped out of bed that he levitated for a split second…okay. That’s good evidence, but it’s piss-poor storytelling. Show me. Don’t tell me! Let’s see it! And all of his talk of “I feel like I’m destined for greatness” is just spoon-feeding the audience. I didn’t buy it.
I like the actor playing Mohinder a lot, but his constant pontificating got on my nerves, and I thought his character had some motivation issues.
Junkie artist might prove interesting. We don’t know enough about him yet.
The bad guy was a bit too Cancer Man/Mr. Smith for me, but maybe they’ll take it in different directions. I sure hope so.
The pilot was originally written and conceived as 2-hours, but it was cut in half. That may be the source of a lot of my problems. I hope so.
saynomore Wrote:I'm still excited at the prospects of this show and can't wait to see what the Super Villains can do, but I hope they don't rush things. These are the "origin" episodes we are watching, and these are my favorite parts as well.
I think the show has loads of potential. I just hope the writing is able to pull it off. So far, I guess I’d say I’m disappointed but hopeful.
