Scott Hajek Wrote:The main advantage to producing a game for consoles versus the PC is the level playing field of hardware. It's tough to make a game for a near infinite number of PC variations versus three different consoles.

I used to think that the PC was the way to go, but it depends on the type of game. For RTS and FPS games, the PC is better, but for adventure games like the Zelda-type games, the console is easier with limited controls... Fighting games are also better on consoles.

I rethought my stand on which console I would prefer. I don't care. All that matters is if the game is fun, faithful to the source material and not rushed to the stores before it is done (Enter the Matrix, anyone?)
Actually there is only one kind of PC (excluding Macintosh) with different levels of hardware which isn't a problem if you write the program for anything short of the LEADING-EDGE hardware (video and sound card mainly). However, each console game requires different programming as each is independent of the others and therefore requires exclusive code. Therefore, I would think that PC would be a much more inclusive platform and easier to program for.

As for controls, I can only give examples of the games I have played. In my experience I found the controls for the "shooter" game Tom Clancy's Roque Spear for the PC to be infinitely easier than the controls for the newest James Bond game for PS2. That is just my opinion.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

But, the programming for the PC requires sound, video, memory, processor speed, input and data storage considerations. With the continual evolution of the PC and the capabilities of each new generation, the PC is a moving target. With Microsoft and their new XBOX programming standard, it will become easier to write for PC and XBOX. But, I am only stating some of the information I've read in gaming mags and websites.

Regarding controls: I agree, PC is easier for more complex control schemes like in a Rogue Spear or other type, but a well done control scheme for a console can be like second nature.

Also, console software is easier to copy-protect (i.e. GameCube proprietary mini-disc) and can control piracy a bit easier than PC.

Actually, the most important factor really is simply this:

A game released on a console has a better chance of making a lot of money than a PC title.

This is the very truth of it. PC games are a tough sell unless there is a lot of hype for the game before it is released. Games based off movies seldom do well in the PC market, but seem to do quite well on consoles.

As far as controls go, it depends on the type of game for me. In my opinion, first person type shooter games play much better on PC's along with real-time/turn based strategy type games such as Age of Empires and the Civilization series. Action/Adventure and sports based games play much better for me on a console.

Considering the history of Kojima-san, I would say the game he envisions is the Action/Adventure type game. He also seems very much console based. If it were to be a PC game, it would more than likely cross over from console to PC, which would very much mean a PS2/3 release along with Gamecube and possibly X-box (I haven't seen many of his games on the X-box yet, but that could change).

The bravery of fighting men (and now women) who believe in their cause is limitless. When faced with pure evil like the forces of the Otherness, and when defending their loved ones from that evil, the military forces of every country would fight to the death, as would the militia in those countries where one existed. Just my opinion.

Y'all have to know that I agree with that statement--on principle alone if nothing else--but what scares me is not the amount of people who would just stand around and do nothing (they'd get eaten), but the amount of people--military or otherwise--who would actively help the otherness...

btw Mike, I love the image of leathering up, arming up, kissing the lady goodbye and just plain doing what person's gotta do...

I might have been influenced by the subconscious recollection of the Duke there...but there's a =reason= why cultural archetypes are what they are. They express a truth about the culture and its members. (BTW, Jake, when the day comes--and it's comin' soon--I'll be right there in Central Park, shaking in my boots alongside the NYC doppelganger of Ken V., shouting incoherently, and praying to God my stray shots bring at least one of the horrors down. Should be a real =interesting= time... And hey, I ain't no hero, believe me. But the idea of Rasalom making his play in my town. No way, man. Let him try that shit in Boston. Fenway Park, by choice.)

Any Idea if the action will be in first-person (like Doom, Halo, etc.), or third person perspective (like the Metal Gear Sold series)?
