I'm no expert, but this looks like a fake to me:

No, it's real. The SOB told me it was for his collection. Looks like I wasn't the only one taken in.

I just bought a signed copy of The Select..... there was a different copy that had one of those plaque things included. Are they normally obtained by people in order to up the selling price like this? I assume you are not a fan of such tactics. I will try to avoid it if that is the case.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

One of us could buy it, FPW declares it a fake, Biggles sues the douchebag, and the $$$ goes toward party favors for the next GU.

Or we could just take him out back, kick the shit out of him.

Just throwing out some nice thoughts there.

It looked real to me. Kinda defeats the purpose to buy a signature plate you can just add to any book you want. I wonder if checks you have written or credit card slips you've signed will appear next on eBay?

But he didn't get much for it - probably because most of us declined to buy?!

Actually, you do realize that fpw doesn't GET anything from the used copies of his books that we buy - no royalties. So, please, if you can, buy NEW copies - NOT remainders, not eBay copies - NEW ones...

(Or maybe fpw doesn't need the royalties as much as some of us poor non-fiction writers.... Wink )

I always buy new FPW books whenever I can. It's just that so many are out of print that I've had to get used and remaindered copies just to have them at all.

Years ago my mother used to say to me... "In this world, Elwood, you can be oh so smart or oh so pleasant."
Well, for years I was smart.
I recommend pleasant.

Damn, I thought for sure I busted the guy!

I compared the scan to my 30 or so genuine signatures, and the ebay sig was missing a loop that is in every one of my signatures.

I'm weary of book plates for a number ofd reasons...

#1. Book plates, even signed ones, do not add much value to the book and in some cases can diminish the value.

#2. There are just way too many fakes out there. A good forgery can bring in a lot of cash for someone selling these, even at just a buck a pop. At least with a signed book, the schmuck has to fork out some dough to the book store.

#3. Several years back I came across a First Edition of Harlan Ellison's Slippage with a signed book plate in it stating 1 of 50 signed copies (or something like that) for about $40. I promtly picked it up and put it out on Ebay to see what it would fetch...and what it fetched was Harlan Ellison himself, claiming that it was a fake. At Harlan's request, I stopped the auction and forwarded the bookseller's info to Harlan. So, I was out $40 and got stuck with a forged bookplate in a first edition book that was now worthless because of the sticker. On the upside, I did get to speak with Harlan Ellison on the phone for a bit, and if you've ever heard him speak, you know what a trip he can be.
