You have a good point about the suits wanting a bankable star.
Christian Bale was seen as a bit of a gamble as Batman, but the unusual casting really paid off. Same is true of Daniel Craig being cast as the latest James Bond, with die-hard fans furious about him being given the part over younger, darker haired actors. But once again we got a much better film because of the interesting directions the filmmakers went in.
But then again, I suppose they were interesting takes on already well established characters. For a motion picture debut, I think it's probably inevitable that the lead role will go to some pretty but bland poster boy.
I'd rather there was never a film, than a bad film.
