I must "clarify" something , I really like very much the original story of Mr Paul Wilson but I really like very much the Michael Mann version of "The Keep"too. They are like two big giant mountains and I respect them...You can't like what Michael Mann 's version, and what he tried to do but you must know of course it's an affair of "artistic taste"...Never you can have a "word"correctly adapted in an "cinematographic image".It's an evidence...

So, don't accuse Michael Mann for HIS version. The theatrical release of 1983 is completely incomplete. The actual film editing 96mns is like some iceberg. The film is a "adult fairy tale". this option need some artistics particularities, it is not a realistic movie but like a "dream"movie. ( the Mann 's words employed in 1982 during the film making). You can like this point of view or not.

That's why, actually again, I'm fighting against the "BIG BAD" studio to make rebirth again the Michael Mann original film editing...Because I'm sure this version have likeness from Mr Wilson's story.

Completely...But from my many researchs, I understand the Paramount studio have all the copyrights. Michael mann didn't have the final cut in 1983. Now, some "new" copyrights are possible: a longer movie include more music (Tangerine Dream rights), the Howard Blake's "walking in the air" reference in the film include new royalties...I think the Studio don't want pay those copyrights and "complete" the movie.

Interesting. Especially the Deleted Scenes photos. Where did you get them? I have heard about the alternate versions, but I have never scene any. Does anyone know if there are any plans to release alternate versions or a Director's Cut? FPW?

I took a quick "run" through the KEEP website. Looks pretty interesting, but the one thing that seems really quite clear from reading the various interviews was what all of us kind of knew all along -- Mann tried to make his own style of movie out of someone else's source material that didn't quite match Mann's vision.

That has always seemed silly to me. If you want to put your own personal vision of a horror movie out there, why would you want to use source material that doesn't match your vision? If you have to change things to make it work for you, I see no sense in making a movie from the book.

Years ago, Mike Mignola (the creator of HELLBOY) and I had a conversation about the characters we loved -- Doc Savage, the Doom Patrol, and a host of others. I was telling him about a Doom Patrol proposal I had just done for DC, and Mignola basically asked me what the point of trying to reinvent these characters really was. It made more sense to take the ideas that excited me about them and create something new -- a story with new characters that played with the same kind of ideas.

Not to overplay it or anything, but it really was a revelation and has greatly influenced my attitude towards my own work and to things like THE KEEP film. I really think Mann had (and still has) an intense, stylistically groundbreaking horror film in him, it's just kind of dissapointing that he had to rework FPW's novel to try and make it.

I believe Mann has disowned it. His original cut was rumored to be 3 hrs. I doubt he wants to have anything more to do with it -- probably would prefer the DVD never be released.
