Legend was another good one, a real favorite of mine.

I watched Return to Oz a few months ago (it is available on Netflix) and as an adult it seemed to lack alot of what made it appealing as a kid. Yes, the wheelies and the Queen were creepy, but they just didn't have that scariness about them when you watch it as an adult. Even for as short as the film is, I found my attention wandering more than once while watching it. I also read that alot of the "issues" with the film when it was originally released were due to people thinking it was meant to be a sequel to The Wizard or Oz when it was really meant to be more of a stand alone story about Dorothy.

I'd say stick with the original Wizard of Oz. That one never loses its appeal.

I agree with your assessment, even down to my own attention wandering at parts, I would still say it was worth the watch though if you hadn't seen it or hadn't seen it in some time. I too, read that it suffered due to the comparison to the Wizard of OZ as well as reading something about how it didn't fare too well due to its rather strange( I guess even for fantasy) tone of the film. The sad thing about that is that those books in addition to containing quite a bit more material than the Wizard of Oz, are a lot stranger than the WOZ lets on and Return to OZ isn't that far off. That being said, The Wizard of Oz is an alltime classic film and as you say never loses its appeal.

On a side note, how does everyone feel about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? I loved that movie as a kid, that damn child catcher creeps the hell out of me. It still holds up well, a bit long perhaps, if only they made cars like that in real life.

Return to Oz is pretty good, holds up pretty well. The beginning is actually rather dark considering this was supposed to be aimed at kids. Also, I think they are called the wheelies or wheelers, anyway they are creepy. Oh and the witch, she is a head case too. Kind of strange to see Merlin from Excalibur as the Gnome King though. I am not sure what you meant by looking for it as in to buy it or rent it, but you can find it on Amazon pretty cheap, it was worth the money to me.

My library is a free resource for vetting movies. I wasn't thinking about buying.

I was a child of the 80's as well, I just had grandparents that had me watch older movies and so I was exposed to a lot of movies that I never would have been. Anyway, CCBB, is a story of a crack pot inventor and his kids, who refurbishes an old race car into a decked out flying car. The deranged Baron of Vulgaria decides to steal the car and the adventure ensues. It is much better than I make it sound I assure you. It has the feel of one of those older Disney movies like Bedknobs and Broomsticks, but actually isn't Disney. You have to see it for the child catcher alone, that freak scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Just some more useless information about was that it was written by Ian Fleming, the Bond man himself, for his son.

As an aside, if you are familiar with Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, in the 3rd book, The Black Dossier you can spot Chitty in the background being worked on by the "Q" brigade.
