Ok, I don't mean to be picky here, but, considering that it takes place in the pine barrens there don't seem to be many pines in that picture. Yes, I understand that there are other kinds of trees in the barrens, but couldn't there be even one on the cover?
The first cover looks like someone is asking to be given a hand up out of a hole. The second one gets the message across, instantly.

Axioms Jack seems to live by (inadvertantly or not):
Why he does what he does: "I chose this life. I know what I'm doing. And on any given day, I could stop doing it. Today, however, isn't that day. And tomorrow won't be either." Bruce Wayne, Identity Crisis
On Rasalom: "Water's wet, the sky is blue...and good old Satan Claus, Jimmy...he's out there...and he's just gettin' stronger." Joe Hallenbeck, The Last Boyscout
