Looks to be a case of short-supply investor craze, like the upper classes madly purchasing Tulips (1637) or middle-class america and Tyco's Beanie Babies in the 1990's.
You never know when something seemingly ordinary will get assigned an instant collector value, and then all it takes is a relatively small number of folks buying up and hording said stock to create a perceived demand, which morphs into a real one.
That, and THE HAUNTED AIR is a Great Book!
