And with poker too. I was playing last night (small time stakes), and found meself with a decision to make. Will my four jacks hold up against Claude's =potential= straight flush? "Gentlemen, let me ponder deeply here..." Lit a Marlboro and studied the cards. "Claude, I don't believe you. See your raise and reraise fifty cents." "Another fifty," sez Claude. "See that and raise the final fifty." "You been called, Mike," said the dealer. "Four jacks, Ceege. You make that hand you wanted?" "No! Oy, Mike, gimme a smoke for the love of your Christian God."

I handed Claude the pack while raking in the chips with my other hand.Big Grin

These little gimmicks usually bore and confuse me (sorry). This one, however, somehow draws me in. It left me wanting to sit and watch this dimly lit poker game, maybe even join in.

A college professor of mine who specialized in high-rise structural welding told us on 9/12 that they were indeed designed to fall that way. This was the first time it was ever seen.

What bothers me is this... If the towers were designed to fall into themselves, and Im sure they were... Why were they not designed with proper fire suppression such as sprinklers. The towers were really the Titanic. They were NEVER expected to BURN or FALL just like the Titanic was never expected to sink ( Not enough life boats) And some more fuel for thought... Why is the glass for the Freedom Tower being made in CHINA???? I guess its OK to send the plans for the Freedom Tower to China. It will make it easier for the next group of terrorists to do their job.

How old was LITTLE JACK when the Towers were built????

Jack was born in '69 - so he would have been hovering around his first birthday when the first tower was built, and the second was finished a year later.

Dan!

Salutations, and good research!

Welcome to the board. You'll like it here.

Art though a librarian by chance?

And, more importantly, are you a fellow hoser?

Axioms Jack seems to live by (inadvertantly or not):

Why he does what he does: "I chose this life. I know what I'm doing. And on any given day, I could stop doing it. Today, however, isn't that day. And tomorrow won't be either." Bruce Wayne, Identity Crisis

Haha, I'm no librarian. I'm a security guard - more time to read!

And definitely a hoser, eh? (or as FPW would spell it - hoser, ay?)

Some interesting parallels there, Linus - I haven't read NIGHTWORLD yet so I can't tell you whether they're accurate or not. Wink

(That said, I don't think I can wait 'til RJ15 to read NIGHTWORLD. It's sitting on my shelf. Mocking me. I heard rumours of Arthurian inference and Arthur's a passion of mine. I can't wait! As soon as I'm done this current readthrough of the Jack series I think I'm going to segue from BY THE SWORD right into NIGHTWORLD.)

Nobody designs a building to fall down, they design them to stand up even under incredible punishment. The trade centers themselves were designed to stand even after multiple hits by large aircraft fully loaded with fuel. Each tower was supported by both a palisade of columns forming its outer wall ( constructed to provide sheer strength)and a bundle of 47 massive steel columns in its core structure. (They ran vertically up the buildings height, they wouldn't come strait down, they'd fall sideways.) Like all large engineered structures, the towers were over-engineered to support many times their anticipated loads.

But you're right, this is the first time it was seen. And it still hasn't been seen again. Three buildings fell that day in their own footprint, only two were struck by planes.

Actually, The Twin Towers had large amounts of asbestos fireproofing which would have necessitated costly removal had they remained standing. The evidence suggests that the cost of its removal may have rivaled the value of the buildings themselves. Larry Silverstein, the owner, not only lucked out having them fall, he collected twice the amount for them from his insurance stating that two planes were two separate attacks. Meanwhile search and rescue crews and the clean up crews have been suffering from all kinds of lung problems, some so severe that they've died from them.
