If Robbie Coltrane is too old for Abe when filming starts, Philip Seymour Hoffman would be perfect!
His character in Charlie Wilson's war (only with a Jewish accent) is almost exactly how I picture Abe.
Ok, just started my re-read of
The Tomb (the Tor "Author's Difinitive Edition") and I'm refreshing my horrible memory yet again...Abe's physical appearance is first described as: "A balding overweight man in his mid-fifties..."
Robbie Coltrane is 59 this year and so would be an excellent choice.
However, assuming that filming starts in 2011, and as the sequels pile up, 12 years from now, at 71, I defy anyone, even Robbie Coltrane, to pass for 58.
Philip Seymore Hoffman is about to turn 42...and every year that filming doesn't start he gets another year closer to Abe's age.
If you've seen his character in Charlie Wilson's War, then you know that he plays an excellent crank...he'd be a great candidate for Abe in the last few movies in the series (12-15 years from now).
