jimbow8 Wrote:Cheers to you Maggers for being a spoiler-buster. I'm a wee bit upset that there was a spoiler (I'm still psyched about seeing this movie, anyway). I read your thread knowing that YOU wouldn't post a spoiler (at least without notice). May I suggest that you post a similar warning in Post #1, ABOVE the spoiler as well as in this one below the spoiler.

Thanks, Jim, it's good to see you back! While the person in question posted a spoiler notice, he said it was a minor spoiler. I disagree.

Many years ago, my high school buddy told me the surpise ending to THE PLANET OF THE APES. It was a hell of a surprise ending, too. I've never forgotten how knowing the ending of that movie affected my viewing of the entire film. Throughout the film, I knew what was coming and it colored every scene. It made the movie a completely different experience for me than it would have been had I not known that extraordinary ending.

That's why I have so little respect for people who blithely let loose the endings or surprises in a film, or a book, for that matter. But in watching a movie, I think it's important that we know only as much as the director wants us to know. Then it's up to us to put the film together in our mind and our experience of it and try to figure out what's coming next.

What is destroyed in letting loose a spoiler is the thrill of discovery in that awesome moment when we experience the suprise FIRSTHAND.

When Rosie O'Donnell had her talk show, she used it as a platform for her points of view, one of which was to spoil surprises in movies because she doesn't like surprises. She blatantly told the surprise in FIGHT CLUB because of that odd point of view. What sort of self-centered nonsense is that? I lost what little respect I had for her.

I will go back and add a big spoiler alert to my first post, even though I am not the spoiler.

Well, for years I was smart.
I recommend pleasant.

Spoilers means spoilers. I posted spoilers. Making a big whoop-dee-doo about my post gave away the ending. When you open a post marked spoilers, you are on your own.

AC

P.S. Years and years of hatred--let it go. And I'm speaking to Rosie, of course. I apologize to those of you who had to read about the big whoop-dee-doo. See the movie and post your own opinion in your own way. I will not be the one who accuses you of anything worth years and years of hatred. Wink

That's silly. Spoilers but little ones means spoilers but little ones. You posted spoilers but little ones. Your post gave away the ending and the whoop-dee-doo is well deserved. When I open a post marked spoilers but little ones, I'm not on my own at all.

It's a small thing. I would have preferred you edited your post to include a proper spoiler warning. Regardless, Happy Thanksgivng. Wink

I assume you have already seen the movie. So you know of what I speak, now. Can you honestly tell me that you expected that ending based on my post? I gave no specifics. Note Maggers' post on the MIST: "I found the film disturbing, particularly the ending." Well, now I know it has a disturbing ending, rather than a happy one. Did she forget to put the word "spoiler" on her post? No, because her spoiler was a small one. Vague. Non-specific. Look at my post again: No characters are mentioned. No main plot-points. Just that vague ending, is all. And spoiler means spoiler. You can't be a little bit pregnant.

AC

P.S. Hope this is all in friendly discussion and that this is not the beginning of a 39 year old grudge. On my end, this is all I have to say about the matter. Apologies to any one who actually figured out the ending based on my post.

P.P.S. I saw the movie again with my family and friends last night. The audience booed the ending. At the limited release, the audience applauded the ending. That's why I like seeing movies in limited release: You see it with true fans of the genre/director/actors/etc. My family, sadly, also booed. I was annoyed the rest of the evening.

As usual, your response to this post by AC says more about you than it does about the movie. Can't you stop your flaming at least till the end of the holidays? And how do you respond to your giving away the ending to The Mist? Tell you what. Flame AC one more time and you and me got a problem. Got it? Now apologize.

Steve got a little crazy here. He's a little overprotective. He still talks bad about Aphew. I'll talk to him. Try to keep in mind, he's just a kid. Sorry again.

P.S. This is the problem with grudge-carrying people. Things get out of control.

My only problem with the ending was that I was concentrating SO hard on what I expected to happen (and didn't) that I didn't pay close enough attention to what he was saying. I had a similar experience with other viewers: I heard one woman state that she needed more closure and others grumbling. I, for one, love ambiguity in movies/stories.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

I listened more intently the second I watched. Each speech by Tommy Lee Jones seemed ominous, almost reflecting the events of the story in an ironic or ambiguous way. My brothers compared it to the Sopranos finale. Since I never watched the Sopranos, I couldn't relate. I tried to address the metaphoric nature of the ambiguous ending in my post above. To me there was closure. I would even see it again. That's how much I liked it.

I'll be back. When I cool down. But I'm not apologizing. Too much flaming on this board, and always by people who live in glass housed. Excuse my mixed metaphor. Happy now, AC. I go 'way now. Got to go break something. Laters.

I haven't seen it yet, hopefully tommorow. My understanding of the plot is that some dude finds some cash and gets chased down by a badass hitman that uses some kind of cattle gun to kill people. You're letting on that evil wins and so forth tells me that pretty much everybody gets whacked and the hitman walks away unscathed. I'm hoping that's the case, I despise happy endings.
