Whenever I hear the word "vorpal" now, all I can think of is this SNL skit:

If you do title it Vorpal, be forewarned that i will probably pull a muscle somewhere laughing if Jack goes galumphing back after his blade goes snicker snack.

Interesting, I own a custom-designed blade called a "Vorpal." I think the smith is called Tom Maringer. It came with a sheath that is worn like a shoulder holster. It's more like a short sword. I've had it for more than 20 years. It will cut you just looking at it.

Then out spoke brave Horatius, the Captain of the Gate: "To every man upon this earth, death cometh soon or late; And how can man die better than facing fearful odds, For the ashes of his fathers, and the temples of his Gods,"
"Well, John Henry said to the Cap'n, "A man ain't nuthin' but a man. But, before I let that steam drill beat me, gonna die with my hammer in my hand, Lawd, Lawd, gonna die with my hammer in my hand."

VORPAL

Welcome

As a fellow AD&Der in my uni days I love the Vorpal idea

Also interested to see where the reference came from

The artist formally known as Britfan

He took his Vorpal sword in hand
Long time the manxome foe he sought
So rested he by the tum-tum tree
And stood awhile in thought.

As in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock! With eyes of flame
Came whiffling through the tulgeywood
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through the Vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head went galumphing back.

The Jabberwocky is the only poem I ever cared about enough to memorize. It is so cool. That's just a part of it, of course, but the pertinent parts that contain the word "Vorpal."

"Tempering The Blade"

Could fall into the "a spear has no branches" category, I guess.

That's my shot in the dark...
