A brief note on Nantucket: Many years ago I made acquaintance of a man who claimed to have created the Old Spice Logo (I forgot his name, but believed him). We met in his shop in Greenport Long Island; the subject was broached by my hunt for Whale ivory. The teeth in particular, a rare commodity being a part of endangered specie. After some conversation and more than a few beers I made a generous offer for the ivory he was willing to part with. His cache consisted of very old Whale teeth, whole and tips thereof; also he had an abundance of ivory piano keys. During our conversation I learned that in the late sixties and through the seventies he had searched New England for proper Scrimshaw media, which is ivory. It had become very difficult to sell Whale teeth at the time of our meeting so he had switched to etching Plexiglas in the same fashion as Scrimshaw; later polymer became an ivory substitute. I obtained a number of very old teeth, found on Nantucket and throughout New England by this individual. The year was 1981 and I had embarked on a personal quest to become Scrimshander. I had moderate success, and to this day have my efforts on display.
