Glad I only spent 49 cents, August 29, 2005
Reviewer: Terry Will (Albuquerque) - See all my reviews
I have been wanting to try a Repairman Jack book, but I'm glad I only spent 49 cents to find out how formulaic and pointless the writing is. How many stereotypes can be lined up in a row? Of course the bad guys are black, and naturally one was the other's prison punk. The tough by-the-book cop makes this one exception... I mean, come on.

I don't know how much F Paul Wilson got paid for this story, but he should have used some of it to pay for an editor. On Page 3 he's wearing "steel toed work boots" but by Page 4 his "sneakers" are "whispering along the sidewalk." Same page, "...he was spun to his left and to hand face down on the hood..." Huh? It's a short story, how long does it take to copyedit this?

If this short story was supposed to whet my appetite for the books, I have a bad taste in my mouth instead.

Every village has to have at least one idiot. His parents were probably siblings.

And he rode to their wedding on a bicycle.

Try to keep a thick skin over it ...

The guy is a dork..

We all love both the character and your style of writing.

In addition, and I mean this with all sincerity. It's very nice to see you keep an active interest in the forum. Honestly it almost makes you feel like a friend to the rest of us and makes you not only "real" but also approachable.

I haven't read this story, so I can't comment directly on it, but the guy just has a differing opinion. He didn't like it. I'm sure there are a lot of people who don't or won't. So what!

We all obviously LOVE RJ. Others don't. To each his own.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

He knows NOTHING about Jack!

Well, we don't need to care about this idiot's opinion. We love F.Paul Wilson and his all works. That's why we are here. Wink

As I said in another thread: Some fresh reviews (sincere, of course)to counter his unseemly opinions wouldn't hurt.

True. We've certainly all demonstrated varying tastes in other literature discussed on this board. Some things others here love I dislike and vice versa.

Paul's right, though: There are plenty of people here with an honest opinion that counters that one; those opinions just haven't been posted. All it takes to raise the story's rating is for them to submit their views. (I'm happy to say my review predates the bad one.) So if you've read the story, get over there, people! Smile

At least it wasn't as mindless a review as "It sucked!" He defended his opinion. I disagree with his assessment of the story but he's entitled to his opinion just like us.
