They were being touched by th Adversary, but interpreted it as though it were The Holy Spirit. Glaeken (Velleur I think) said so in a questioning manner in his thoughts earlier in the book.

I don't think they were really being influenced by The Otherness as much as The One was just too strong for them. They were too stupid and ignorant to any real logical interpretation to carry out any meaningful task. In the end they only served to alert Carol to the forces at work against her child. So, they actually did help The One, but I don't believe it was as The Otherness would have planned. Could be though.
