The Mad American Wrote:Great picks. I too love "Dog Soldiers"(probably in my top 5 list, it is Night of the Living Dead with werewolves and humor) and "The Descent" but I really am growing to dislike Neil Marshall, it is like he pulled a bait and switch on us with those first two movies.
I don't think "Fido" was better than "Shaun of the Dead" though. But I too liked both versions of Dawn, the original for its very clear message that so many people missed and the remake just for the fun of it.
"Wicker Man" was great but Nicolas Cage should be flogged for the remake, what a pile of garbage that was. I have not seen "The Devils" but will search out a copy to view.
I never bothered with the remake of
The Wicker Man. The movie is one that I love so much, I knew that any sort of remake would diminish it for me. Especially one involving Nicolas Cage. Bleh. I did hear rumor that Christopher Lee wanted to make a sequel to the original movie. That might be good, if they ever pulled it together, although it's a little unnecessary.
It's funny that you mention the message in the original
Dawn. Romero's social commentaries in
Night,
Dawn, and
Day did not bother me. But I HATED the horseshit commentary in
Land,
Diary, and
Survival. Romero for me pulled the ultimate bait and switch, delivering three great zombie movies, all but defining the entire zombie genre, and following up decades later with, in my opinion, nearly unwatchable garbage.
I do not normally approve of remakes. Every now and then, one comes along that I can appreciate.
The Hills have Eyes and
The Last House on the Left are really the only two remakes that I can think of off the top of my head that I truly enjoyed. There are a many that are watchable (but not necessary), and many more that are just utter shit, but these two I really did enjoy.

I could not agree more. I enjoyed
House of a 1000 Corpses and
The Devils Rejects, as homage films, not really anything original, but what he did to the
Halloween series, especially the sequel, made me want to vomit. Rob Zombie's
Halloween 2 was unforgiveable.
Here's another great Japanese movie that has yet to be mentioned in this thread. It's horror in the same sense that
Lord of the Flies was horror - the scenario itself. Check out
Battle Royale - GREAT movie, solid social commentary, a very "holy shit" movie. I hope to whatever movie gods are out there that Hollywood never so much as as considers touching this film.
