The question is how long has negotiations been going on for HBO to adapt it? It's quite possible the publisher got wind of this and decided to hold off, to try and time it's release. I find it interesting that book five comes out only a few weeks after the finale of season one.

I think that the HBO negotiations actually may have served to push the release up rather than delay it. I think it is a good thing and Martin may start to be pushed by his publishers to meet dates rather than drag-ass for years and years as he has been more likely to do in the past. So, with the seeming success of the HBO series and a whole new audience there will be much more pressure to keep that new fan base happy (and of course, sale more books).

But I have spent years absolutely LOVING this series and being completely frustrated by Martin so this could be 1 part reality and 2 parts frustrated conspiracy theory.

I had gotten the point of giving up on it entirely, a little due to the delays in publishing the new books and a lot due to the way Martin treated the fans who were waiting and asking when the new books would be out. But the HBO series has renewed my interest in the series and my hope that Martin will finally commit to finishing it.

You and me both. Martin has said that date was firm, but I have not gotten a notice saying my preorder has shipped yet. I'm starting to get a little nervous.

I would only change your wording from "...a bit frustrating" to "...completely and totally frustrating to the point of madness"Big Grin

I have never done the preorder thing, would you get notice of the shipping this early? There are still almost 4 weeks until the release date.

TT mentions the release date as June 12th. Was the date pushed back? I'm loving book 2. Reading book 1 concurrent with the series was a bad idea. A Clash of Kings exceeded my expectations in a big way. I always thought Fantasy was a bit geeky but it's not at all. If I had any complaint at all I'd say the books are a little too violent. It's done well and is interesting as violence goes but sometimes it's enough to get squeamish.

Just to mention it I saw a mini interview with Martin on HBO and he appears to be a dead ringer for the steamship captain Abner Cady from Fevre Dream.

The first release date I saw was May 15th, then it moved to a June date, but the most current date is July 12th (that is what is listed on both Amazon and Martin's website).

And yeah your description of Martin is very fitting. I think the date being pushed may have something to do with as Marc said, the finale of the series on HBO.

And this series definitely isn't your old fashioned geek boy fantasy, not that there is anything wrong wtih that, it is just this series changed things up a bit.

The first date that GRRM and his publishers gave as the official release date of the new book was July 12th. Whatever Amazon and its ilk have said before has been pure conjecture. I pre-ordered as soon as Amazon's date matched that of GRRM's, and I expect it to ship that date.

As to what happened with Feast and Dance, GRRM gave a detailed post in his blog that explains why it took so long.

It makes for good reading into the mindset of an author, the process of developing a story, and the perils he/she can get themselves into.

Be warned there are some minor spoilers about Dance of Dragons (specifically which POVs are used).

Meh. That is a long winded explanation that really tells nothing of why it took so freaking long. Years and years. Half way done at this point and still took years and years to get to this point...

I better stop. I am getting back to really having issues with Martin when I should just be excited that finally, FINALLY we get ADOD. Big Grin

I just now noticed that it is July 12th, but I could have sworn it said June 12th when I preordered. I could have read it wrong, though.

Today is the day. I got a notice that it was shipped, but the book wasn't in the mail today. *sobs*

I am flat ass broke so I couldn't get it yet either. Sob is right. I downloaded the sample chapters on my Kindle and really regret doing it. Feel like a heroin addict now who can't get his fix.
